Horizontal displacement lines (like a VHS), seem to add a black bar

[Vegas Pro 14 - Windows]

Hello! I am trying to use a VHS overlay such as the below one as a displacement map to essentially get "transparent" horizontal bars that scroll across the screen like a bad VHS tape. I get the effect to work, but I end up with a big fuzzy black bar on the left side (or right side if I invert it). It seems like it's displacing the whole image on top of just the white scratches in the overlay. How can I go about getting rid of the black bar? I tried cropping it out, but it just generates a new bar over the current view regardless, and shows when rendered.

You would match the aspect of your displacement image to the project.

I can think of a half dozen ways, but we would need to see complete media and project properties in order to help you.

I thought that might be the case, but I can't seem to get the overlay to resize correctly. As-is, the overlay is 1280x720 and my video clip and project output is 1920x1080. As far as I can tell, it scales correctly as the transparent scratch effect goes all the way to the left and right edges, there's just that weird black blob bar on the left. Photo should clarify what I'm talking about.

Do you by chance have the EFFECTS SPLIT PREVIEW enabled. It is right above the preview window.

I think I know your problem.

Widescreen vhs and DVD are both a bit mismatched with respect to true 16:9 aspect ratio.

Experiment with the "Adjust Source Media to Match Output" render switch.

Or "Stretch to Match Output" render switch.

If that doesn't work, set your Project Properties for NTSC 480i Widescreen, not 16:9.

Split screen is disabled.

I tried playing with those two settings. I am rendering at 1080p and would like to avoid interlaced. It doesn't seem to help with the perspective changed.

If it helps any, if I change the horizontal displacement to zero, the fuzzy bar goes away (but also doesn't show the transparent bars that I want).

I figured out that the black bar on the left is affected when I change the "Edge pixel handling" option in the displacement map. I have it on Transparent Background, which makes the non-existent background behind it show as black. While I don't know why it's doing that, I am able to get the effect I want by duplicating my video's track, and having that as the background (and moving it so it aligns perfectly). Hopefully someone can offer a better solution, but this is at least one work around for anyone who might have the same issue.
