how to automatically split timeline if scene changes significantly

95% of my recordings are lectures, where I video with 3 cameras, front on, 45 angle, then back of speaker with crowd shot. Most of the time I shoot and cut between shots in post, but sometimes I try to cut live, and if most of the cuts are ok, I may only have to color correct later. (I'm trying to color correct live as well, but that's another story)

I've heard that there is a feature that will detect changes in the background, which would then allow me to automatically place splits when that happens. Anyone know how I can do that? Then, I plan to copy the whole timeline three times, then delete the segments that I don't need, and color correct each row. (not sure if "segments" and "row" are proper terms)

I'm running vegas 13, but I also have 15

Can't comment on the auto splitting feature you're looking for but if you want to limit your color correction work, make sure auto exposure and auto white balance are disabled on your cameras and set the appropriately when recording.

Note that AE does assume you don't have changing lighting conditions you have to contend with. I would hope you wouldn't in a lecture unless you're outside or can't close the blinds.

I believe Happy Otter Scripts for Vegas has an Optical Scene Detection feature.

Scene cut detection is a feature of Davinci Resolve, Apple FinalCut Pro and Premiere Pro, but not VegasPro

The scene detect tool in VEGASPython allows you to split clips on the timeline or in the mediapool based on scene changes.

Thanks everybody. I had trouble viewing the "otter" products, and it looks like the vegas python solution only works on vegas 15, which I have. Is this a free script or does it cost?

VEGAS Python also works in VP18. I successfully used the scene detect script.

It probably could not work in the older Sony branded versions from 13 below.

VEGASPython works only with VEGAS Version 15 and higher. It is an open source solution and is free to use.
