How to convert Canon lut .csv to a .cube lut.

BruceUSA wrote on 4/6/2021, 2:21 PM

I am trying to mess with canon Luts but when I download and extract the file, its give me a .csv and this .csv file is not usable. I am wondering how others are able to convert and use Canon Luts. Can any here help? Perhaps if you have Canon Luts. Can you share would be awesome. Thank you.

I've not found a way to do this yet, although I keep trying. You could probably do something in Argyll, but it's way over my head. See this:

It should not be converted to 3D LUT cube because the original *.csv curve is 10bits 1D LUT.
3D LUTs have much less steps than 1D LUTs, for this case making a Resolve’s *.olut (output 1D LUT) is the best way to go.

Musicvid . Thanks for your input. Much appreciated. Now, I wonder what are those people who has the new R5/R6 that shoot Canon Log. How are they apply Canon luts? None Canon official let's?

PS. Ah. Might as well try the unofficial Canon Lut instead.

I've got a couple of good LUT converters but neither of them will take CSV as input. From the thread I linked, it looks like you might make a 1D LUT in Resolve, but of course that won't work in Vegas. You might find some guidance with Argyll, but omg is it complicated.

Musicvid wrote on 4/6/2021, 6:03 PM

Let me know how it turns out, because I would love to include them in my LUTS for Vegas package, which you may also find useful.

Got a link to Panasonic LUTS for GHx series?

I've taken all the Canon LUTS back to 2018, eliminated the duplicates, and am putting the applicable ones into my LUTS for Vegas archive.

Musicvid wrote on 4/7/2021, 11:14 AM

nvm I found them

Musicvid wrote on 4/7/2021, 10:14 PM

Now included in my free LUTS4Vegas package are:

  • Image Profile LUTS
  • Video Profile LUTS
  • Canon EOS Conversion LUTS
  • Panasonic Color Grading LUTS

There are 185 LUTS included, so let me know which ones don't work in Vegas and I will remove them.

Are the photo and monitor profile LUTs different from the ICC monitor profiles folder? They look almost identical.

I don't see a folder name image profile LUTs or video profile LUTs, just Canon EOS LUTs, ICC Monitor Profiles, Panasonic Color Grading LUTs and Photo and Monitor Profile LUTs..

Do we need ICC monitor profiles? I don't see how Vegas makes use of them. A color managed app like Photoshop can use them as working spaces.

Musicvid wrote on 4/8/2021, 12:48 PM

The ICC profiles are the original standards. The LUTS were made directly from those ICCs by me. So yes, I hope they are identical.

Roger, for purposes of identification "image" = "photo." Hope that makes some sense.

I don't know that anyone "needs" all those profiles. The ICCs are included for reference. I made them available because I can, period. You are free to use any of them or not as you wish, but can you please lighten up a bit and take it easy on me? This is not a contest.

Just to clarify my tone, it's not accusatory-- I'm trying to understand what's what as it changed since the last batch I downloaded. There is no documentation to explain them and the file names are similar. I'm not interested in a competition as I have nothing to prove, I want to learn and share what I know where it's helpful.

I would suggest a readme file in the main folder for users who come across it to understand what is what and how they can be used.

That recent comment on the relationship between the ICC and LUT is actually very helpful to me- now I think I understand how these LUTs work and were created.

I'll admit that I'm a bit late to this thread, but I didn't think the r5 C-LOG 3 (or C-LOG) footage could be read by Vegas pro 18. If I'm understanding that correctly and this thread, I'm trying to figure out how a LUT would be useful without the ability to ingest c-log or raw footage. Please do tell me I'm missing something and Vegas has an update that allows for Canon r5 footage to be handled properly with c-log 3. I've tried 4K 60p, 4K 29.97, and 1080 60p and Vegas won't recognize it because of the 4:2:2 color space. If I remove c-log or c-log 3, Vegas will handle it just fine, but I lose editing capabilities when it comes to exposure, contrast, and color.

If I'm reading this thread as a false hope, here's to hoping Magix will release with version 19 with 4:2:2 capabilities (and RAW)!

JN- wrote on 4/28/2021, 3:38 AM

@j.razz As I understand it this is the current state below with respect to R5 footage, if you can elaborate upon it then by all means do so.

The OP's initial query re: Canon Luts, was addressed. Using them with the R5 files is another issue.

#1 Canon raw is not supported in VP18 b482.

#2 The R5 All-I 8 bit 420 files (not Hevc, not Clog) only work properly in VP if decoding in I/O is set off.

#3 Hevc (CLOG) 10 bit 422 files don't load into VP18.

#4 Non Hevc, non Clog, 420 8 bit files load ok with the condition mentioned above about decoding set to off for ALL-I files.

#3 Files do load in VP16, but with a colour artifact.

When I queried about the possibility of getting Canon raw support anytime soon, the answer was not very promising ...

VEGASDerek wrote on 3/16/2021, 4:50 PM

”In terms of RAW, right now we are prioritizing ProRes and BlackMagic. We have some other updates we need to get done for XAVC and Red support as well. Canon Raw is lower on our priority list at the moment.

If you have photoshop try this:

USE Cube

You can now export color lookup tables from Photoshop in multiple formats. The exported files can then be applied in Photoshop, After Effects, SpeedGrade, and other image/video editing applications.

You can export color lookup tables only from documents that have a background layer and additional layers to modify colors.

Export lookup tables

Open an image having a background layer.

Add adjustment layers to give the image the desired look or effect.

Select Fill > Export > Color Lookup Tables.

In the Export Color Lookup Tables dialog, enter a Description.

Optionally, enter a Copyright string. Photoshop automatically prefixes © Copyright <current year> to the text you entered.

Enter a value in the Grid Points field (0-256). A higher value for this field creates bigger files having higher quality. Alternatively, select a fuzzy quality setting—Poor, Low, Medium, High, or Maximum—from the pop-up menu.

Select one or more of the available formats in which you want to export the color lookup table:

3DL

CUBE

CSP

ICC Profile

Click OK.

Select the location on your computer where you want to save the generated files. Also, enter a base filename to which Photoshop automatically appends the file extensions.

Considerations for exporting to different formats

If you start with a document in the LAB color mode, you can export the color lookup table as an ICC abstract profile. Abstract profiles are the most flexible of the formats and you can apply them to any color mode. When you export the table in an RGB-only format, Photoshop automatically converts the document to the RGB color mode.

If you start with a document in the CMYK color profile, you can export the color lookup table as an ICC CMYK device link profile. When you export the table in an RGB-only format, Photoshop automatically converts the document to the RGB color mode.

If you start with a document in the RGB color mode, you can export the color lookup table only in 3DLUT (3DL, CUBE, and CSP) and RGB device link formats.
