How to delete default fade-to-black transition at end of clip?

studio-4 wrote on 5/31/2021, 3:36 AM

Vegas Movie Studio 17 adds a short fade-to-black transition to the end of my video clips by default:

1. How do I delete it?
2. How do I change the default behavior to not place a fade-to-black transition at the end of my clips?

Thanks!

Vegas doesn't do this to my knowledge. Some players, including VLC, add a fadeout / fadein when playing in looped mode.

studio-4 wrote on 5/31/2021, 8:35 PM

Thanks for the replies! When the cursor is hovering over the tail of the clip, a pop-up says, "Fade in offset 00:00:00:00," but there still remains a visible, very short fade-to-black event when played back, even though this counter indicates a zero time-period (clips are imported MOVs).

The pop-up also says, "Drag to adjust the length of the fade," and when I attempt to drag, it remains at "00:00:00:00." The small black "corner" at the end of the clip (on upper-right of clip) seems to indicate a fade-out event is present in the timeline. It's so small, I can't seem to select it to delete.

To clarify: After rendering, a brief fade-to-black event occurs (visibly fading the picture to black) at the end of the clip upon playback.

Here's the screenshots:

(don't know if you can embed inline images here):

Yes you can as explained by JackS a few posts above.

Your first link doesn't work and with the other two images there is no fade. I don't understand what you are talking about. Where are you seeing this fade? During preview, after render?

studio-4 wrote on 5/31/2021, 9:16 PM

Oh, gotcha (fixed!). Thanks! Yes, after render (MP4), there's a visible, short fade-to-black only on the video-lane upon playback even though the offset displays "00:00:00:00," and as you say, "There is no fade." The title lanes cut-to-black (as expected). I attempted a workaround to get rid of it (i.e., I split the clip, moved the "end" past the loop-point, and set the render to loop-area only).

Also, does Vegas place short fade-outs at the end of clips by default? If so, I still need to determine how to un-default it (i.e., I never explicitly placed a fade-event there).

Since the fade-to-black offset displays "00:00:00:00," I'm assuming this is a result of a damaged/corrupted timeline/file and shouldn't be doing this.

You need to turn on QUANTIZE to FRAME.

studio-4 wrote on 5/31/2021, 11:05 PM

Thanks! I just checked: "Quantize to Frames" is already checked [OPTIONS → Quantize to Frames, or ALT + F8].

A Reddit user asked how to eliminate the default audio auto fade-in/out when splitting clips; perhaps there's a clue to the mystery there? [e.g., OPTIONS → Quickfade Audio Edits.]

Below is an iPhone shot of my options menu (my PC is no longer taking "print screen" images for some reason). I do use the automatic crossfade feature, so I don't want to deselect that. Maybe I did something inadvertently when I split the clip?

All I can surmise is that I must have mistakenly introduced the fade after splitting and moving the clip around the timeline, inadvertently overlapping them slightly, then moving it; though, since the offset reads, "00:00:00:00," this seems to indicate something is "wrong" or "broken." I'll just create a new project and reconstruct it and see if it happens again.

Okay, I created a new project and added the same source clip and there is NO fade-to-black at the end of the clip! I must've done something inadvertently to create that event. I did, however, this time uncheck Quickfade Audio Edits. Thanks for everyone's help!

No, not in my experience.

I suspect the "offset" you are referring to is the corner black marker that is there to be dragged out if you want a fade. If it's not being used it will say "00.00.00:00" i.e zero because there is no fade.

EricLNZ wrote on 5/31/2021, 11:30 PM

Though this user's question asks how to eliminate the auto fade-in/out when splitting audio clips, perhaps there's a clue to the mystery here?

No it's unrelated. It's about audio not video and the very brief fade Vegas applies to the end of audio clips to avoid a harsh end. It can be altered in Preferences/Editing. The default is 1ms.

EricLNZ wrote on 5/31/2021, 11:38 PM

Maybe I did something inadvertently when I split the clip?

Possibly. If you overlapped the split clip then a crossfade would have been created and if you then moved the clips apart maybe each clip retained the crossfade length as a fade. But I cannot reproduce it. I have however had it happen when clips are moved to a different track.

EricLNZ wrote on 5/31/2021, 11:42 PM

No, as previously explained this is normal and nothing is broken. Try a 'factory reset' as this sometimes fixes problems although I'm not sure that you have one. Anyway instructions here https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

It applies to VMS as well as Vegas Pro. Make sure you tick the box to clear the cache.

studio-4 wrote on 5/31/2021, 11:46 PM

Thanks again for your comments. Well, that was the weird part—the offset indicator displayed "00:00:00:00," yet the fade-to-black event would occur every time I played the clip. This would be visible both in the preview display and upon playback of the rendered clip. I'll check out the cache tip also, thanks!

So this issue is mostly resolved since I cannot reproduce it in a new project with same media and at least I know that it isn't the default behavior. Thanks again for everyone's help!
