How to draw lines, arrows, etc over a static background in realtime?

I am using the trial of Vegas Movie Studio 14 (It says platinum, but I plan to buy the highest level package, "suite" after I confirm it can do everything I need it to.) Also I am using Windows 10 Pro.

Have you ever seen one of those videos where they draw on the screen? (ex. a football replay where they pause the screen they draw arrows all over it with a yellow marker to show where the players will go.)

In my case I am trying to show a static map image in the background, then draw lines/arrows/etc to show how close it is to get from point A to the library, train station etc. But I don't want the lines or arrows to just suddenly appear at once, I want them to actually draw onto the screen as though I were drawing them in real time.

Can anyone tell me how to achieve this? I appreciate any help!

There is no easy way to do this inside VMS or VP. However, you can import you map into a drawing program then use a screen capture program to capture your live drawing on the map. You can than import this video file into Vegas and pan, crop and edit to suit your end result.

(planning to upgrade to a more powerful graphics laptop when cashflows allow)

Here is a dated but absolutely FREE program that might do what you want. I downloaded it a while back but have only played with it a little bit: http://www.routegenerator.net/ You would use route generator outside of Vegas to create the map animation, then bring the video file into Vegas.

You load a map image, or capture one from Google maps, then draw a multi-point route on it. You tell it how long to take to draw the route -- i.e. 5 seconds -- then give it a folder to work in, and it makes a whole bunch of individual .bmp frames of the animation, then creates an .avi movie of the animation. Again, the interface seems somewhat dated, but the program is simple and FREE.

Some other paid options which have animated route generators (and which I have no personal experience with):

Do it on your iPhone.

Thanks everyone for all of the advice, I tried a few of these tools then finally found a tutorial on how to do it using Adobe After Effects, so I did that and imported the video clip.
