I need help. Vegas Pro 13 crashes the entire computer when rendering

dewster85 wrote on 10/1/2016, 8:12 AM

So I go to render a video.  If I want mpeg2, and use the Program stream preset, everything is fine.  But if my video is longer than 1hr30min, then program stream preset won't suffice, as the finished video will not fit onto a DVD.  So I have made customized ones.  If I choose the customized one, about 6-9% thru the render the whole computer restarts.  it just dies and restarts.  Anybody else having this problem?  What gives?  Should I uninstall and reinstall?

I do use it on different computers, which is legal withing the End User License Agreement.  I have an older desktop, newer desktop, and a laptop.  Works perfect on the other two.  The problem child is the laptop, an older Toshiba Qosmio.  Windows 10 OS, Intel Core i7 Q720 1.60GHZ, 8 GB Ram, 500 GB HDD.

Could the latest Windows 10 update have affected it?  is the coding in Vegas Pro just uncooperative with the processor at those settings?  It was happening on my old Vegas 12, and I finally updated the laptop to Vegas 13, and it is still happening.  it is beyond infuriating.  Thank you in advance for your help.

Sounds like it's overheating to me. Clean the vents. Make sure it's on a hard surface with the intakes clear. Consider opening it up for a gentle clean. Experiment by pointing a fan at it and see if it helps. You could install core temp and monitor what happens when you render. http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

I did not even think about that.  Such a simple answer.  I will update as I get work done.  Thank you.

The problem child is the laptop, an older Toshiba Qosmio.

If the anwer will be that the temperatur during rendering becomes too high, maybe a easy solution is to open the laptop and clean it.

Well I get up to 96 degrees C on all four cores until it shut off this time.  I did put a fan near it and it went from crashing at 8% to crashing at 17% finished.  Maybe the laptop just can't handle the intense rendering of Vegas.  maybe I could find other ways of cooling too.  I will also put that Core Temp on all my computers and see the temp the others get to.  Thank you so much, if anything, just for the awareness of Core Temp!!

Nick was right with his idea - 96 degree C are too high.

The laptop should not become so hot. I really would check if it possible to take out the dust (what is the most likely reason why it becomes so hot).

Just pulling the battery and RAM covers may give you enough room to suck the dust out. On some models a hard drive or dvd drive may be easy to remove as well.

It idles around 50-70 C, i don't know if that is normal for a laptop.  My desktops both idle around 20-30 C.  This has been very educational!

I just opened everything I could, there is literally no dust near any of the compartments.  I have had it on a glass desk for a couple years, transporting it every once in a while to complete work.  That desk does not get very dusty.
I never opened this laptop up before, it was interesting to see how it was built.  Also found out I have a compartment for a second hard drive!!!

It has been a couple years since I bought it, but I think I vaguely remember reading reviews and seeing people having problems with the Qosmio overheating.  It is a huge laptop that uses lots of power, so that could be the case.

I also realize that with the design of the case, the vents have nearly no room underneath to let air flow.  I will use something to prop up the four corners to let air flow underneath and let you guys know what happens.  Thanks everyone!!!

Viola!!!  Found the culprit!!!  The vents must not have had enough room to breathe.  I put a cassette case under each corner of laptop and we have hit a max of 85 C during rendering on the main core.  all 3 other cores have hit 84 as the max.  It isn't going exponentially up until it hits 96 C for all four.  Thanks everyone!!!  Fun times!!!
