Importing Clip with Transparent Background

Dan-Murphy wrote on 11/1/2021, 11:36 PM

I am having issues with importing a transparent overlay. I have togged on the laegacy support for Quicktimein the preferences. The clip is QT, rendered as "RGB + Alpha" and after importing it I change the media to "Straight- Unmatted." This has worked in every version of Vegas that I can recall, but not now. I would greatly appreciate if anyone could point me in the right direction. Thanks

@Dan-Murphy - Very frustrating. What Version of VP are you using? What Build? What are your project settings? Do a MediaInfo and post it here. We will all try and assist.

@Dan-Murphy - Do have look at this Forum link: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/how-to-open-mov-motion-jpeg-video-mjpg-in-vegas-pro-17--121841/#ca758881

As QT is no longer supported by Apple for Windows since 2016, I've moved forward to using an alternative ALPHA renderer: MagicYUV. However, it produces MASSIVE files! Maybe it's time for me to re-download the last QT option instead!!

@Grazie

Have you tried GrassValey HQX? It's 10bit and supports alpha. For a 5 sec default title (Sample Text), MagicYUV 10bit RGBA was 155 MB. GrassValley HQX was only 11 MB--quite a substantial difference. It's a very good codec IMHO.

@wwaag - Thanks, I'll have a Butcher's at it! In the meantime, I've solved @Dan-Murphy issue. I'd forgotten to set the following:

I did that and it produces lovely ALPHA Channel output.

@Dan-Murphy and @wwaag A 5 Second render, using QT it produced, 674KB - That's less than a tenth of the GrassValley HQX.

@wwaag - Ah! The GV site is wretched to downloading that CODEC . . .

Thanks for all the tips/feedback guys! I'm on an all-day shoot, so will respond as soon as I can test drive these ideas. For this project, I was trying to do entirely in 4K, so the title reveal was a 4K overlay from BusyBoxx. Perhaps that is my issue! I guess, if this were not so maddeningly frustrating at times, then everyone would be able to do this. Thanks again!

It's way more than that. Quicktime is a wrapper. At the very least, we would need to know what is inside,  and be forewarned that Vegas does not support all QT variants with alpha. Start here, paying particular attention to the details in Section C.

@Musicvid - Got a problem with that link?

Musicvid wrote on 11/2/2021, 10:43 AM

That's odd -- it's worked for years; it's the same damn problem that has plagued this host for months. It is copied directly from my signature, and it works from there....

Grazie wrote on 11/2/2021, 10:49 AM

Directly from your sig, yes.

Musicvid wrote on 11/2/2021, 10:56 AM

Try it now, and thanks for pointing it out!

The forum software is adding extra characters when pasting the link......

@Musicvid - In like a Bullet! And I’ve bumped into some Characters in my Life too 😎.

Can you detail how to make grassvalley work as an alpha, it doesn't seem to work within the quicktime render template. Vegas throws up an error with compressed depth set to 32, it works fine with value 24, but no alpha @wwaag

@Former user

GV HQX is a Video for Windows codec--not QuickTime. Here's a screengrab. Note that you must tick as shown. When imported back into Vegas you must manually set the Alpha channel properties.
