It will always insert the event on the timeline, at exactly the point you have your cursor set on the existing or new track you have selected. That is by design.

You can always drag your media to the Project Media window where it will sit until you decide to use it.

Strongly suggest you step through the Interactive Tutorials included in your new program before attempting to navigate the ship without a chart. They will tell you everything you need to be able to ask informed questions of your peer users. Welcome to the forum.

Strange things you said. I never see this behaviour, I'm importing so many things in different ways. And they never automatically land on timeline. It happens only when I drag them onto timeline (from explorer or trimmer, or project media).

I think there is setting for this, but unfortunatelly i can't find it now.

Nothing strange in the least.

You just told me you are not using File>Open.

I repeat--EVERYONE can benefit from the Vegas Interactive tutorials. Its all there.

Musicvid - even if I use File->Import, media isn't placed on timeline. Just only in project media. Don't know what "File=>Open" has with it, it opens project, not import media..?

Rajat-t, do you use Vegas Pro or Movie Studio? What you describe sounds like you use Movie Studio.
