IOS .MOV files have bit me - cant view or render though I could before

RobertoArc wrote on 5/15/2021, 10:20 PM

Based on what I see on the net, this is probably one of the most commonly asked questions and the fix is not to be found. I use my iphone to capture video. Move to vegas, render, great. A few weeks ago had a black screen part way through and it rendered that way. Tried a tip to copy whole timeline and paste new. It worked. Then. Now I am making a new video and its playing follow the bouncing blank I open my work file, I see the videos. For a few seconds. Next thing I know, all videos are blank and I shake my head ..what happened? So searching the WWW I try converting to MP4. Vegas says it is corrupted and wont load it. Tried MPEG2. Vegas says its corrupted and wont load. EVEN though I can see it on windows media play. I have tried the Quicktime fix, the alternate Quicktime fix, NOTHING.

Can someone PLEASE give me the real fix ? BETTER YET...Hey Sony...how about embracing one of the most commonly used video capture formats on the planet - I am no apple fan but geeze...4 year olds on up own an Iphone.

Help appreciated and pardon my angst ... :-)

Hey Sony...how about embracing........

If you want to complain to Sony, you have to go to their site.

Unfortunately, you've ended up on the Magix page.

If you want help you need to provide some specifics.

What version of Vegas Pro are you using?
What is your media, specifically? Answer using Media Info.

Did you change any settings from defaults?

@RobertoArc phone footage is invariably variable frame rate which can cause issues with some older versions of VP. Util via my signature fixes this, VFR2CFR. Converts to Constant frame rate. If the file is corrupted maybe make available here and other users can test, via say Dropbox or similar. What version of Vegas Pro are u using.

Sometimes converting .mov to .mp4 can also resolve issues, is also available in the util.

Make sure that you have tried enabling quicktime in the depreciated list, and that you have the old 32 bit quicktime app installed.

Thanks all. For details. Sony Ver. 9 - Files are just typical .MOV from an iphone. HAs always worked. And in this cases, worked till it didnt. What I mean is as I was creating my timeline, it was fine. Then I hit one bad. Well, after that, the all went bad. Not viewable. I close and reopen, there they are. For about 15 seconds. then blank.

Perhaps I can find the old 32 bit quicktime, but what did you mean by this "Make sure that you have tried enabling quicktime in the depreciated list" ?

@RobertoArc Options/Preferences ...

Since you are on version 9 the screenshot from VP18 is not applicable.

You really need to supply the information requested by myself and RogerS, otherwise it’s just a guessing game on our part. So far, after three posts from you we now know that you use Sony VP 9.

Sony Vegas 9 is not a Magix product, and it is about twelve years old. Therefore, you will probably receive only anecdotal support here.

iPhone files since iPhone 5, I believe, are all VFR. They are supported in all current Vegas versions, but not yours.

Sony Vegas Pro 9.0c requires Quicktime 7.7 or earlier. Some MOV/MP4 files are supported natively, but not VFR.

Your best bet, if you are not ready to upgrade, is to convert your files in Handbrake.

I AM GOING TO LOSE MY MIND. I converted all my clips using AVC (Audio Video COnvertor) rebuilt my video from scratch and all worked. I had one error I wanted to correct, so opened it up this morning and ALL the clips are BLANK ....ARGGGGG. SO I have been hesitant to upgrade because if I do and it has the same issue, I am going to LOSE IT ....

My results thus far. Upgraded to 18 and it now accepts my converted videos. Quite a new interface change for my in the UI. I was very happy with 9 (if it aint broke dont fix it and have spent countless hours doing everything i needed). Have not tried direct .MOV files yet but will give it a whirl soon. Fingers crossed but at least I know it will accept an AVC conversion...

Additionally, versions of VEGAS Pro before 15 (maybe 14?) do not support HEVC, so if your iPhone is recording "High Efficiency" video, you'll need to change that to "Most Compatible" as those VEGAS versions are likely to either not import the video, or only import the Audio from the video.

I was using 15, now have just got 17, and it was a step backwards. At least in 15, .MOV was an acceptable format. In 17, it rejects virtually all .MOV files as "unknown format". Really frustrating.

jetdv wrote on 5/29/2021, 3:36 PM

@Bill-Koumarelos, Did you try turning Quicktime back on as shown in the 5th response here?

Bill-Koumarelos wrote on 5/29/2021, 6:06 PM

Quicktime appears to be on, but still the same stuff. And one additional issue........not only difficulty to navigate to the timeline....you cannot "drag and drop" anymore either, the way I used to on 15. I will eventually get there.....but the going is much slower.

When you right-click on media and go to properties/general, which plugin is it using?

i.e.:
Plug-In
  Name: so4compoundplug.dll

If you disabled so4 in preferences try changing false back to true and testing again.

I just tried dragging a video from Windows explorer straight to the timeline in V17 and it worked.
