Mask first 20secs of video then fade in from black

I have Vegas Movie Studio 9.

I want the first 20secs of my video to be "blacked out" while it's associated audio plays normally, then fade the video in (from black). I followed the 'fade-in/out" tutorial, but that causes a fade-in over the entire 20secs. I want it to be black for 20secs, then fade in. Is this possible?

My setup:
CPU: Intel Core i5 7200U
RAM: 16GB (2x8) DDR4
HD: M.2 Crucial MX300 275GB SSD

Add 20 secs of black at the beginning then fade from that. I'm not sure what MS9 has but have a look for Media Generators Solid black colour to use.

Should be able to add an empty event for the first twenty seconds.

Or enable "ignore event grouping" which enables you to trim the audio and video of an event separately.

Select the clip and ungroup the audio an video track (for example, right click/group/clea.n) That way you can manipulate them separately (i.e. leave the audio track its full length while shortening and fading the video track independently). Once you're done you can regroup them if you like (depends on your workflow, it's useful in the early stage of editing when your initial sync may not yet be perfectly accurate)
