Mixed samplerates for audio causing trouble.

Former user wrote on 5/15/2021, 2:54 AM

I have a video with audio recorded at 48,000 (lav) and shotgun audio only at 44,100. Some said that Vegas can work with the two audio sources, but I notice when I do try to merge them, the program stutters and really struggles. Perhaps it would be better to dump the audio sources in a DAW and output them to match the audio-with video? Or is there something I can toggle in Vegas to make the two sources work together better? Best practices in this scenario?

I re-sampled the audio to match bit-rates between both video audio and stand alone audio but keep getting a flicker, video playback seems to suffer. So it may not be a bit rate conflict but trying to sync audio seems to strain Vegas.

Vegas started life as a DAW. What you are describing may be a problem with audio buffers, But first, tell us about your system and files, which audio driver you have chosen in Vegas, and be sure you are running the latest driver version. I did mixed audio work for years on a dual core with built in audio. Never an issue.

As already discussed very often here in the forum:
A well-filled signature would make at least half of the questions superfluous.

Normally different sample rate (and bit depth) files (even on the same track) cause no problems, As MV stated, experiment with the playback buffer setting (Options> Preferences> Device type) You may also want to temporarily bypass or remove plug-ins to see if one of them is the culprit.

@walter-i. TBH, and not I hope too strict? I think it's worth considering that all users coming here should be required to have at least the basics of their system(s) posted in their signature. Without it it probably costs Magix a few extra hard drives per year, and unnecessary backwards and forwards for everyone here.

Short of that requirement when users sign up to this forum, and that it becomes at that stage a requirement to supply this info. we could request that any users update their signature before proceeding with further discussion.

Deep apologies. Sorry to have asked.

@Former user please don't feel bad. Your questions deserve to be answered but more information, as others have mentioned, is needed. What format were the original audio files and what format did you convert to when you tried to adjust the bitrate? Audio is very low demand on any modern system, so chances are it is a format/ codec problem rather than hardware problem. (other than audio card and drivers, which can make a difference)

@Former user The video footage is H264 and the audio is wav format, 16 bit. I will probably need to re-encode the footage to pro-res because machines tend to have trouble with that codec, no matter what NLE I use. If I just play back the original footage, it is fine. When I add the other audio file, the program struggles. Understandably, it has to mitigate two sample rates and a sub par format. Because someone here mentioned Vegas can handle mixed audio samplerate and many mentioned that H264 is not an issue, I went ahead. Fact is, it (H264 and mixed samplerates as a topper) is very much an issue with Vegas (and most NLE's), no matter what computer or graphics card you have.

Sorry to ask another question but are the H264 audio tracks at 44 or 48k sample rate?

Former user wrote on 5/15/2021, 12:38 PM

Yes different sample rates, sorry. Moral of the story, get a better camera with a better codec output and record audio at same sample rate. Programs/machines don't like mixed sample rates and H264 no matter the hype.

Most AVC videos have embedded AAC audio. I have never encountered an AVC (H264 or otherwise) with PCM audio.

@rraud Panasonic GH3. Please tell Panasonic to get their act together.😀😀😀 This is an outrage.

Here, don't take my word for it. https://pastebin.com/p8XBAHWS It should not be but it is.

Shame on Panasonic.

XAVC is standardized to be AVC video paired with PCM audio.

I am enlightened, Thanks @Marco.
