MOV FILE, BLACK SCREEN BLINK ON PREVIEW AND AFTER RENDERING

jvras wrote on 7/14/2022, 5:27 PM

Hi, I have a problem.
I have probably installed every version of Sony Vegas, the same on each. Well, I have a MOV file, dumped from Iphone 12, during editing, the movie flickers black from time to time, after rendering it is the same, I have downloaded and installed QuickTime, with other formats there is no such problem. Can someone help me? Regards ~ jvras

Sure. Start with Section C here:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/

iPhone 12 VFR files are incompatible with all versions of "Sony" Vegas, and older versions of Magix Vegas software.

You're probably talking about the dolbyvision/HLG HEVC 10bit files. If you have a intel CPU with a IGPU then that should be used as decoder in FILE I/O setting. Normally Vegas will choose that automatically if it's available.

If you are using a different decoder such as Nvidia, this problem did exist, but doesn't now on VP19, nor the final VP18 version (527). The problem is that GPU decoding doesn't work with this codec, 4K 10bit HEVC + GPU decoder without GPU decoding is not usable

In VP19 the default HEVC legacy decoder will now work with these files. This is a good thing because it's a much stronger decoder that will use all your CPU, the GPU decoder does not.

TLDR: Best Vegas to use is VP19, probably build 550, using Legacy HEVC decoder, or use VP18(527) with GPU decoder (not legacy) with proxies, not playable without

Can you explain it a little more clearly? Can I do something about it? I am using Vegas Pro 19

I only have 1 Iphone12 10bit HEVC file and it works for me on VP19 using both legacy decoder and GPU decoder without black screen or black flashing. I know the codec was updated, and did change. If you want to upload a problem video to a file sharing site others can try your file

jvras wrote on 7/14/2022, 7:23 PM

I updated VP to version 550 and so far everything works fine, but now I have a problem that the preview is stuttering terribly, I don't know what it's caused by.

Right-click on the media and "create proxy file" to improve performance and avoid stuttering.

Former user wrote on 7/14/2022, 7:35 PM

That's because GPU decoding doesn't work in Vegas for this codec except if you are using an Intel with it's IGPU as decoder. It is a vegas fault, not fault of your GPU card. Because of this you are better off using the legacy decoder because it will use all your CPU, while the regular decoder does not.

You only have a 6core CPU though so playback will be bad. I have 12core and playback is mostly bad, depending on frame rate. So I don't think there's much more you can do, if you want to provide more info read the link @Musicvid posted, but probably not much you can do but use proxies

earlier it did not stutter so much, only with movies with iphone in mov format there is this problem, I rendered the file in adobe after effects in .mov format and it does not stutter

Thank's for help guys! :)

What is your preview setting in the UI.
With me on laptop it plays fluently at 60 fps

This actually plays very well on my computer with VP19(643) , it's using GPU DECODE, because it's the 8bit variant, not the 10bit HLG. Maybe someone can help you get that to play. 6core CPU + GPU decode seems possible.

Because this file plays so well (60fps BEST/FULL), I'll leave the file information here for anyone interested because 4K60 hevc that plays well on Vegas is rare

On my laptop this file and even my own GOPro 4K HEVC 50 p are playing constant 60p on Best/Full Preview in VPro 19 build 643, look my screenshot and screenvideo

@j-v You're very lucky.

Unfortunately with this iphone file I am seeing the black flashes the OP spoke about. You can get rid of them by setting dynamic ram preview to zero. But in doing so it reduces the performance especially across edit points. It is exceptional in how well it scrubs and plays smoothly for 4K60 HEVC, and is notable

Reyfox wrote on 7/15/2022, 9:27 AM

I don't see black flashes, but I get a blistering [sarcasm] 6fps in Preview>Auto. But in Draft>Auto, 55fps.

Also noticed @jvras is running VP19 Build 341. There have been a couple of updates for VP19......

Hi, i get black frames with Legacy HEVC Off, i loaded it 4 times & the black frames were random, with Legacy HEVC on it plays a lot better, no black frames but there are still the occasional very brief pauses, (like you would get if you cut 4-5 frames out & closed the gap ), Proxy didn't really improve playback,

Played it in VLC player 1st just to see.. it played smoothly, & i have to say, this HEVC Sample played absolutely perfectly smooth 1st time around in MEP/MS.
