Movie Studio 17.0 Platinum support for 240 fps slow motion

jmbouffard wrote on 3/17/2021, 6:57 AM

I have many sequences captured with a GoPro 8 Black in 1080p 240 fps. I can see that in the properties of a video event I can only slow down to 0.250 while 240 fps would require 0.125.

However I read some post proposing to right click on the video file and to select "Add at Project Frame Rate". If I do so with a 2 sec sequence, strangely, the resulting added event will be 16 sec, suggesting that it indeed slowed down 8 times. However, the added event is, in reality, 2 copies of the video slowed down 4 times.

I find it troublesome that Movie Studio 17.0 is not capable of handling 240 fps files for slow motion. This format is fairly common given that all GoPro cameras can generate it since, I think, version 6.

What I'm currently doing is slowing down my sequence 4x and rendering a new video at 60fps that I can then slow down again 2x in my original project. This is VERY inconvenient as I want to transition between normal speed and slow motion in my project so I need to search frame per frame in both sequences to find where they connect.

Am missing something here that would let me use my video sequences in an easier way?

I don't agree and this is the reason why I posted specifically in the VEGAS MOVIE STUDIO thread. All the options proposed in the other thread either don't exist or don't behave as specified when trying them in Movie Studio 17.0 Platinum.

Therefore I feel it would be useful to have this thread specific to the capabilities of Movie Studio 17.0 Platinum.

Can you upload 1 sec 240fps raw clip for me to play with? what codec is it?

jmbouffard wrote on 3/18/2021, 7:12 AM

@FayFen regarding the codec, I included below the view from MediaInfo showing the information of a file generated by my GoPro 8 Black. I will share a short video file soon. Thanks.

This works also in VMS as described for Vpro, the problem is only that the max slow down in Vegas/VMS is 0.250 (and you need 0.125).

Wow, you can add 240fps media at projects framerate in a 60fps project rate but not in 30fps project rate.

@FayFen here is a very short (~1.5sec) sequence captured at 240 fps with my GoPro Hero 8 Black to play with. Thanks

@FayFen Not sure if my sequence added above can be downloaded therefore I shared it also via DropBox at following link:

You are correct to share the dropbox as it is the original. Uploading video here in this forum will change the format.
