MS13 Plat not importing MOV files properly

gary-beckwith wrote on 12/23/2020, 12:20 AM

hello i have movie studio platinum 13.

I have some .mov files that came from iPhone video. When I try to load them into my project, only the audio track shows up. I can view the files with VLC but the Movie Studio can't import the video. I'm sure I could convert the files but I'd rather avoid that if possible.

Any suggestions?

thank you

@gary-beckwith Post media info so we can see what's in your problem mov files. Instructions here https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

Also which iPhone are they from? MSP13 is a few years old now and it could be that old technology cannot read more modern technology's files.

yes MSP13 is a little old but it works fine for me except for this. Hoping I don't have to get new software every 5 years, but even if I did, then would the new software read my old project files? It's like I have to keep the old software and old project files for every project.

No problem to open that file in VMS Pl 17, look

Therefore you have allow in the Option I show to allow the QT plugin tto work in the program. You can try that software for 30 days following this link: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/vegas-movie-studio/?_oB=movie-studio-platinum

@j-v Are you sure you are using the QT plugin? When I dragged the mov file into VMS Plat 17 Build 204 I had to wait while VMS "phoned home" to activate the HEVC-Codec, which it did successfully. The file is now playing with the plug-in as below

@gary-beckwith I'm not surprised MS13 cannot handle the file as I don't think HEVC was in common use when MS13 was designed? Also the file appears to have a variable framerate which video editors don't like although VMS Plat 17 handled this one okay.

As for updating VMS, later versions should open earlier versions vf files but you might run into problems with third party video FX that were used and which are either not available or not compliant with later version.

  • Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 13 (2015) does not have a Deprecated Features Tab, nor does one have to enable the qt7 plugin, as it is standard.
  • Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 13 does not support Variable Frame Rate video.
  • Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 13 does not open HEVC. It will open HD 1920x1080 AVC.

For these reasons, your Vegas version will not open your iPhone video. Your options are to encode in Handbrake or ffmpeg, or upgrade your Vegas Movie Studio Platinum installation.
