Look at the MediaInfo of your rendered file, what size do it tell you?
That is the size of your rendering the first time.

Thanks for the response. I looked and the size of the rendered mp4s is 1920x1080. I can't understand what I did. However, I tried again by exporting one of the three *.vf files and confirming that it played properly at 1920x1080, then opened a new project with it, added the other two previously rendered files, edited then exported the compilation and the finished video played properly, full screen.

Don't put your video on the top (PIP) track.

Thanks. Because of your earlier advice I always delete the PIP track as soon as I create a new project. Perhaps I forgot to do that.
