MTS files versus MP4

Werner_NOR wrote on 6/3/2021, 10:01 AM

I have recently bought a new Panasonic camera (HC-VXF1 - 4K) and with this camera I can film in either mts format or mp4 (4K or 1920/1080). I use Movie Studio 16 Platinum) and Vegas Pro 18, and sometimes DaVinci Resolve 15.

What is the best file format to use - mts or mp4, with regard to quality and ease of use?

Vegas has now problem with editing mts or mp4, but when I export the project (with mts timeline) from Vegas Pro to DaVinci Resolve15, the audio is missing. MP4 timeline is exported/imported ok.

I would like to have the option to be able to use the color and fairlight pages in Davinci Resolve 15. Or shall I just forget about DR15 and try to do everything in Vegas Pro?

By the way - the reason I use DaVinci Resolve 15, and not later versions, is because my laptop uses Intel 4000 graphics, my processor is 2 core with 16gb ram, and I am not able to use any version after 15.

MTS and MP4 are container types which does not impact quality. It all depends on what the codec properties are inside these containers (and the frame size used).

As far as I know, MTS is limited to FHD max. For universal use, I prefer MP4.

Hmm, your 1st challenge or dead point is the editing hardware no matter which or what editing software you do prefer.

2ndly, the MTS/M2TS container (format) is more strict than a mp4. Take this for 4k-shooting and banish that mts out of your sight.

Lastly, do some read in the camera manual, the quality takes its place there.

Thank you all for quick replies. My hardware I have to live with for the time being, so I will take your advice and do some more reading in the manual. But I guess mp4 is the best solution.

MTS and MP4 work fine in Vegas. There was a Windows update problem with MTS that has since been fixed.

What is the best file format to use - mts or mp4, with regard to quality and ease of use?

What is your intended use for the video?

Musicvid,

I film nature and wildlife here in Norway. It is mostly for personal use, but some of it is good enough quality to be shown on TV. I do not use Youtube or other social media.

Then you should shoot MP4 in 4K. Would love to see your work!

Here is some footage I shot of a couple of swans this morning (6 o'clock...). I shot mp4 in 4k and rendered it to mp4 1920 x 1080 in Vegas Pro 18 (Intel 4000 graphics/2 core CPU) without any problems. The edit is preliminary and I have not done anything to the audio, but I am rather pleased with the result from my new camera. The link is to the video in my One Drive.

@Werner_NOR For a more crispy and detailed downscaled image of your 4k recording, I would advice to render with Voukoder https://www.voukoder.org/
