My problem with the name, "Vegas."

Len Kaufman wrote on 3/25/2017, 8:43 PM

There is apparently some kind of tracking mechanism in place. I suspect it's Google Ad Words. Every time I look up something in Google, related to (Magix) Vegas, I get a flurry of e-mails relating to traveling to Las Vegas. A similar thing happens when I look up something related to Microsoft Windows; I get a string of e-mails trying to sell me Anderson Windows. And if I put a filter in place on my e-mail program, that would eliminate possibly relevant e-mails related to Vegas and MS Windows. Kinda' annoying.

Change your email address.

Check your computer for malware! This doesn't happen to me. You may have some kind of tracking software that has infected your computer. How would anyone know your email address simply by making a search in Google?

I've run the MS malware software, and AVG and others. I believe it happens because those offending companies have purchased Google Adwords, and Google's software identifies the IP address that looked up those words. And of course, that IP address is linked to my e-mail. At least that's the best explanation I can come up with.

And changing my e-mail address is not a practical option, as all of my business and personal contacts have and use that address.

Len, Google does not link your searches and email, and then divulge that information to spammers. You may be in denial.

As long as you continue to use that computer with that ip and that email (ANYONE CAN SEE YOUR IP ADDRESS.!) you will continue to get spammed. Or you can live with it; third options are elusive in a case like this.

Are you sure you're performing a selective search and not a general one? If you enclose the words Magix and Vegas within quotes, it will limit the search returns.

Thank you, Gary. I'll try that, going forward.

It's pretty easy to change your IP address. Just login to your cable router (or whatever device you use to connect to the internet) and request to renew your IP address and you will randomly get assigned another one from your ISP. This happens to me automatically every time we have a power failure but you can manually renew your IP.

I still don't see how your IP address gets connected to your email (there is no connection) but you can change your IP address quite easily to find out.

Unfortunately, isp's now use 99% fixed addy's resulting from nsa directives. Even if you request a dynamic address these days, you probably won't get it. Once a worm is on one's computer, it may be able to intercept bilateral communications without needing to reference the address.

My suspicions now lean toward one of the add-ons to Firefox. I just deleted one (savefrom.net) and looking at some others.

Oh yea, browser extensions would be a big suspicion. I would disable them all and see if it stops. Then enable half of them and see if starts up. If so, disable half of those, until you hone in on the one that's causing it.

I wish that were true for FIOS. I have my website locked down so that you can only access the admin panel from my IP address and every time it changes, I have to FTP into it and add my new IP to the .htaccess file so that I can get in via the web. At least at FIOS, IP changes are still happening even when you don't want them to. ;-)

Silent-install extensions are never good.
