No audio when MS open with Zoom

Hi all. I am helping a family member learn MS17, which she just purchased. (I am a Vegas Pro user.) She installed MS17 and was sharing her screen with me via Zoom, like we often do, and never have had any audio issues.

Every time she opened MS17 on her laptop, she could no longer hear me through Zoom. My mic was not muted, and she could still hear audio from other programs on her computer. Also, I wouldn't expect her opening MS17 affect my mic or anything else on my computer for that matter.

I checked all of the audio settings on her laptop and everything looked good. It is almost like MS is capturing the audio from out Zoom and not letting it get to the speaker.

Does anyone have an idea about what could be causing this? I can try Teamviewer with her tomorrow, but we like Zoom better.

Thanks!

Options->Preferences->Audio Device

Select a Vegas audio driver that is different than the one used by Zoom.

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure what you are saying - there is only 1 audio output device on her laptop, so won't there only be 1 audio driver?

No, there should be more than one Windows audio device available to Vegas. What do you see?

At the very least you should have:

--Microsoft Sound Mapper *That's the WDM driver

--Direct Sound Surround Device (or similar) *That's the ASIO driver

--Wave Classic Audio Driver *That's the DirectShow driver

Zoom sequesters its sound drivers, so you have to choose something else for other open applications. I connected a USB audio interface to expand my I/O options. Experiment.

Thanks again for your insight. I see what you are saying now, and I didn't realize that Zoom does that. I will give it a try next time she is available.

With Vegas Pro open, and the Direct Surround driver selected, both Vegas audio and Zoom audio I/O work as expected, no conflicts.

More testing today...

I tried the 4 different entries in the in the MS17 audio device settings, and nothing helped. Here is what was listed on her laptop:

Also, here are her Zoom audio settings:

Here is a workaround that allowed use to use MS17 while using Zoom:

  1. We join Zoom call with video
  2. She started MS17
  3. Then she shares her screen

When done in this order, she can still hear me talking and I can guide her in using MS17. But, if she shares her screen first, and then starts MS17, she can no longer hear me, no matter audio device she selects. Also, if she closes MS17, she can still not hear me. And even if she stops sharing her screen with me, she can still not hear me. The only way to get it to the state again where she can hear me via Zoom, is for me to take the Zoom session down completely, and we both reconnect.

That's good sleuthing, and I'm glad you now have a workaround!

I was having similar frustration until I hooked up my local Mic and monitoring through USB audio interface with its own ASIO driver. I found the same thing can be accomplished using an outboard webcam with its own Mic.

To be sure, sensible audio routing is something we spend years learning, as @rraud can attest. Maybe he can share some more nuggets with you, but honestly, getting involved with this Zoom thing only served to remind me how much I have forgotten and how much things have changed since I did this for a living (signature below).

Welcome to the forums, and with your perseverance I'm sure you will become a capable contributor over time.

Another solution is just not to use audio sharing, which works poorly when one computer just has the built-in webcam and Mic.

@musicvid - thanks again for your responses and info. Her laptop is actually pretty straightforward. On my systems, I have a number if interfaces and audio drivers, and I have never had such an issue\. Maybe just lucky, lol?

Also, we weren't using the audio sharing feature of Zoom, I was mainly just getting started showing her how to use MS17 via her sharing her screen with me. The next step would be to try audio sharing.

This does seem to be a bug in Zoom, as even after exiting MS, she still couldn't hear me. We had to kill and restart the Zoom session. We may try Teamviewer as well, which I have had good experience with.

Thanks again. I did take a look at your sig - very impressive experience! You have done some really neat projects. Best to you.
