I found one cause of this associated with major Windows Updates -- if you have custom Performance, Power, and VM values set, the update may default them all to Normal.

Check your Settings - System - Power and sleep - Additional power settings and select Maximum Performance mode.

Guys, thanks for your suggestions. I ended up having a tech person evaluate my computer, and it appears it's approaching the end of its useful life. Time for a new one.
