phone splits video into 2 files. can't import 2nd file.

Robert-Persson wrote on 10/17/2019, 4:25 AM

I shot a video with my phone (LG G5) which was larger than 4GB, so the phone split it into two files. When I tried to import the files into Vegas Pro 13, it accepted the 1st file, but refused the 2nd with the message "The file could not be opened." I worked round it by first re-encoding the second file using File Converter (which uses FFMPEG), but that is obviously not an ideal solution.

How can I fix this?

I imported the files onto the computer using MTP in Windows Explorer. I tried to import them into Vegas both from the file menu and by dragging and dropping.

Did you try to drag them one by one or first only the second?

What buildnr of 13 do you use?

Yes, Device Explorer.

LG has a free video editor app which I suspect will also do the trick.

I can't find the LG video editor on my phone or on Google Play. Perhaps it is only for more recent models?

And what is Device Explorer? I googled but all I came up with was software for managing IoT devices.

I have tried every combination of dragging one, dragging both, importing one and importing both from the file menu.

I am using build 373.

From what I understand, Device Explorer can explore any device that has a drive letter, but my phone is connected by MTP and therefore doesn't have a drive letter, and I can't take the SD card out of my phone without a lot of hassle.

In the app you'll find the menu "import > from USB device".

It's getting weird now. The thing is that I deleted the files from my phone as soon as I had copied them to the computer, so in order to try out importing from the Photos app I tried to copy them back to the phone from the computer. The first file copied across OK, but the second one (the one that Vegas doesn't like), wouldn't copy across. I tried several times and each time the progress bar got about a quarter of the way across and got stuck. After I while each time I heard an audible alert from Windows and then the file transfer window disappeared. Then I made a copy of the file to another location on the Windows computer and this time I was able to copy it.

But now I have selected import from USB device and progress is stuck at "0 items found so far".

Sylk wrote on 10/17/2019, 6:06 PM

The goal was to import files without corruption, but if a file is corrupted on computer, resend it on the phone will doesn't help. Same, trying to import files from your phone make no sense if you already deleted files on it.

@Robert-Persson You're obviously stuffed this time, for reasons set out by @Sylk and will have to use your File Converter versions. But next time you now have other suggestions to try. Does your phone not have a USB connection?

Sylk wrote on 10/17/2019, 6:40 PM

@Robert-Persson You might try a repair tool (which manages MP4 files) to attempt to rescue your video.

PS: always perform repair with a copy of the original corrupted file. Keep original file integrity.

Your phone files are variable frame rate, which are not supported in V13.

The stock advice would be to convert them to cfr in Handbrake, but I'm unsure how that will affect the break point, probably make a hiccup. One solution of which I'm more confident is VideoRedo v6, which has a free trial.
