portions of imported MP4 file have black screens

I am using using Vegas 17 (build 455) on a Windows 10 Dell laptop. I imported a 48-minute MP4 file created by a Zoom session, and a few portions of the clip just have black screens. When I view the MP4 using VLC it is fine--I made a copy using VLC (H.264+MP3), imported that and got the same thing. What to do?

I have been using Vegas for years, and it's sad problems like this still persist!

Zoom files are nonstandard with 900-fram GOPs (!) and may contain stream errors as well. 100% not the fault of Vegas software. Your conversion should not contain mp3 audio, as that is noncompliant also. Convert to x264 /  AAC  in Handbrake instead. See this recent thread:

Post back if you want uploading instructions for us to analyze for stream errors.

I love Handbrake--had not thought to use it. Worked fine. Thanks for your help!

You bet! You will notice that your Handbrake file is quite a bit larger than the Zoom file, which is substandard. The bigger file is of course of no better quality, and if the size bothers you, time permitting, I can give some suggestions, or reduce it for you. Here's a quote from a recent private conversation on the same subject:

After testing Zoom recordings with several different encoder options, I found the easiest handling on my modest system (good quality, too) with the following settings:

x264 encoder (HOS, Voukoder, Handbrake, ffmpeg, VideoRedo)

  • Quality RF24
  • Preset Veryfast
  • Zerolatency Tune if it available, otherwise None
  • Frame Rate, Resolution matching source.

The output file will be around 1 Mbps, a little larger than the original Zoom file.
