Preview and renders are just a mess

Tom-Mellor wrote on 1/12/2023, 9:54 PM

So, just as a bit of background. I do tiktok snippets of my gameplay, its not been anything big, i just like to do it as a bit of fun. It keeps me occupied and i like to use my imagination in doing a little snippet of something which hasnt been over edited like what some of the other tiktokers do.

ANYWAY, everything was working perfectly fine, i put my SD card in from my switch, (no viruses, its never left my switch from the moment i bought it) transferred a load of videos from my switch to my laptop, tried to edit them, and nope, they just kept coming out like this. Okay then, what about if i go back to editing captures from my laptop, and nope. Preview still looks like that. Okay then, what happens if i just edit it as much as i can from what i can see and hear, and then render it? The render looks just like the preview. Now, all of that was on Vegas 16, so, thinking, oh, maybe ive broken it. So, someone informed me that humblebundle was offering vegas 18 for $/£20, great, maybe that will fix my issue.................nope.

You name it, ive tried it, from what i know as to how to fix an issue within vegas. Re-install, done, repair installation, done. Restarted my computer, done. upped the amount of ram, done. Using footage ive downloaded from the internet, still pushes out the same concoction of what looks like a pirated film from the days of Kazaa and Limewire. Ive even changed which graphics card it uses, to no avail. Google after google just tells me to lower the quality of the preview, and nope. Doesnt do a thing.

Now, i get that some of you might be thinking, hmm, maybe the files ARE corrupted. I thought the same, so i downloaded hitfilm. Works fine there. No issues. I could understand if it was a compatibility issue within Vegas itself, but ive been editing the same file type for so long now, i would fail to see how that could be an issue, and even then, that doesn't explain when ive downloaded a video in a different format altogether, it still produces this mess.

Specs:

Ryzen 7 - 4800h with integrated graphics which have been turned off since day one

16gb Ram

RTX 2060

Storage: Doesnt seem to matter if it comes from an external SSD, Internal NVME or my 6tb Backup Hard Drive, same thing, every time

Im fully aware its not the most powerful laptop in the world, but at the same time, its not exactly a lightweight either.

any help, would be greatly appreciated

here is a video of what happens everytime i try to edit something

We still do not know what kind of files you are importing into Vegas. Saying "switch" tells me nothing, thank you.

Please provide all of the information is Section "C" of the link I provided in order to give us a starting point for troubleshooting, in addition to the information you already provided, thank you

Thanks for your response, but i did say that it wasnt just from one source, but many sources. Doesnt seem to matter what the source is, it ends up the same way

Your uploaded video is Variable Frame Rate. That's very likely the cause of your problem. Record in Constant Frame Rate.

How come this has only recently happened, and how come it happens with other files too, such as ones downloaded from youtube or footage recorded from a webcam? (files are still uploading)

You uploaded file decodes just fine in Vegas Pro 20. I don't have answers for your other questions; however, you might try resetting your Vegas Pro 18.

Ctrl+Shift+Doubleclick.

Well, this is even more baffling then. Ive tried the reset, ive tried it multiple times, and it still just doesnt want to play. Looks like im gonna have to either convert every file (800gb worth) or learn how to use another video editor

VEGAS preview quality settings will affect how it looks in the preview window, if it still looks bad in the render, check your bitrate... i notice you're using H264CBR rate control mode in your encode settings, have you tried other options? Try to use the variable bitrate, 20-40mbps that's greyed out there... re-enable it and check... how does that look?

Didnt realise the video didnt upload, probably got a bit too eager, but ive added a video to of what i see when i play something through the preview

@Tom-Mellor , I've done some game play footage videos in the past. I captured the footage captured with my Radeon video card. And yes, while it might be a variable frame rate video, with a much higher "swing" than the one you supplied, I've had no problems at all.

With your footage, I was able to play it back at full 60fps. I can show you videos I've done.

So what the hell is going on with my copy 😂😂😂. It’s across both vegas 16 and 18, so there has to be something wrong with either vegas or my laptop, but I’m leaning more towards vegas, as the footage works perfectly fine in other video editors. I’ve just used vegas for several years now, I don’t want to change to another film editing software

Reyfox wrote on 1/17/2023, 11:30 AM

@Tom-Mellor I tried it in Vegas 20 first. Your singing is horrible. I hope your game play is better.

It worked flawlessly in VP18 playing back at 60P Preview/Full. So it isn't Vegas..... the proof is in the video.

Tried your clip in both V18 and V20, my GPU is 1080Ti and it runs perfectly as shown below (screen shot). Even with VFR.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

13th gen i913900K - water cooled, 96GB RAM, 4TB M2 drive, 4TB games SSD, 2TB video SSD, GPU RTX 4080 Super, Windows 11 pro

I downloaded handbrake, ensured everything was set to fixed fps as someone mentioned earlier on, nope, still comes up as corrupted. So, I ran a GPU and cpu health check. Three of them, and apparently, they’re both in fine working order. I have another laptop, but it struggles to run Streamlabs, let alone vegas 😂

Reyfox wrote on 1/18/2023, 5:51 AM

@Tom-Mellor I have an all AMD computer. I've edited game footage for several years and no issues. I would suggest that you try using the iGPU and make sure you are using drivers 22.5.1 and see what happens. I don't know what the most "reliable" Nvidia drivers to use, someone else would have to supply that information.

But at least see if the GPU in the AMD CPU works.
