Problem loading DXnHR files in VegasPro

James Moore wrote on 6/7/2020, 3:40 PM

I am working in VegasPro16 and DaVinci Resolve. I am exporting clips with alpha channels from Resolve but I can't get VEgas to work with them. Any suggestions appreciated.

I installed the AVID codec pack from:

https://avid.secure.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Download/en423319

The AVID codec DNXHR works nicely on Resolve - both export and import but when I try to load the files in VegasPro Vegas either crashes on loading large files or on some short ones it will import it but not play it on the timeline.

One example is a file created as QuickTime/DNxHR 12 bit. It imports to Vegas but you can't drag it to the timeline.

The files properties yields:

Sream Video 1

Quicktime 7 does not support 12 bit. Unfortunately, that is the last version for Windows

I think that is going to be a tough nut to crack. Resolve won't output alpha for very many formats, and AKAIK Vegas doesn't like those formats. Maybe try an image sequence? (DPX, TIFF...)

Yeah, I couldn't get the DNxHR files to work in Vegas. Before resorting to image sequences I did try installing the Grass Valley Edius codecs on the Win box and am successfully working with AVI's with alpha's using the Grass Valley codec rendering in Resolve.

I'm poking around Resolve now. The DNxHR files produced by Resolve are MXF, and will not open at all with the consumer Avid LE codecs (MOV). Apples and Oranges.

So that leaves you with only Grass Valley for Alpha export.

Resolve can export (and import) MXF DNxHR files as well as a Qucktime version. I believe it was the QuickTime version of the DNxHR that I had minimal ability to load in Vegas. MXF didn't work at all... well, all don't work.

I suspect that it is the AVID LE codecs that don't support the Alpha channel. The Grass Valley AVI's appear to be working well though.

To be clear, The DNxHR LE version is the Quicktime MOV version, and I found it in Resolve. It supports alpha as always, but the ones from Resolve don't open in Vegas for some reason. Grass Valley HQX is quite a good codec, I've discovered.

+1 for GV avi's in Vegas. Timecode works too, so you can round-trip if you need to. I didn't notice the alpha option in Resolve for this codec, as it is hidden if you render "single" rather than "individual clips." That means some effects (e.g. speed ramps) may not be possible to render out... but maybe a compound clip will work?

Well spotted!

Yes, in Resolve you must have individual clips checked off in order to see any alpha channel possibilities. The Grass Valley codec worked well for me. I was able to export a clip with alpha generated both as a fusion clip and compound clip. However the XML for the timeline referred to the clip 'inside' the compound clip as opposed to the compound clip. I had to use 'conform lock to selected media clip' in order to get the XML to reference the rendered Compound Clip. This wasn't the case with fusion clips.

I've been advocating the GV CODEC since the days of VP14/15. Glad it's catching on :-)

It's how I sent shots between VEGAS Pro and Fusion 9 for compositing.
