problem with HDR and Color Curves

David-Long wrote on 1/28/2019, 12:15 PM

The issue is this.

I have project set to 2020 2084 1000 nits as well as the clip and the preview. Scopes set to enable st 2085 HDR 10 bit.

Working on a A7111 hlg file. When I bring in color curves, the wave form changes from between about 0 and 1000 to 1 and 100. No other Fx tool does this. I like using curves but this makes the clip washed out and curves do not work properly. 100 is the upper limit no matter what I do. Something is limiting this to non HDR. If I change the clip to rec 2020 then the curves work but the image does not display best on TV.

Any ideas?

Sounds like Curves is not working in 2020 space?

May be worth pursuing a bug report?

Curve FX not yet working in HDR color workspace.

Something they need to improve in the future.

What is funny is that if I set the clip properties to Rec 2020, then curves work but the 2020 2084 or 93 60 2084 nope.

Something also unrelated is that I bought a phone ticket to talk in person, but now one answers. I did send a memo to support via the wed site on this, but have not heard a thing. Is Magix this bad with customers?

Well I did hear back from Magix about this issue. Here is what I got:

--------

Dear Mr. Long,

Thank you for your message.

As you have likely already surmised the effects are processing using the color space chosen in the project properties.

I am sure that you all might fully understand what is beign said here. The only thing I can think is that what is being said is that when you choose a color space only certain effects work. To me this is sad as curves should be available for 2020 2084 as they are in other video editing programs. And it must not be just the 2020 as curves work when the video is set to Rec 2020, but I can not get the rendered HDR to look good. They just do not work when the clip is set to P3-D60-ST 2084 (xxxx nits) or Rec 2020 ST 2084 (1000 nits).

Also if anyone is reading this :). I miss being able to adjust individually, whites, blacks, shadows etc. How do you all do this?

"I miss being able to adjust individually, whites, blacks, shadows etc. How do you all do this?"

Did you try using the Levels FX?

David-Long wrote on 1/31/2019, 7:46 AM

Actually yes that is what I have been using as well as brightness and contrast.

Besides just flat out playing with effects I got info from this:

https://www.moviestudiozen.com/free-tutorials/sony-vegas-pro/526-colour-correction-tools-sony-vegas-pro

Still not quite happy with my results. Would really like to see what others are doing an getting taking HLG to HDR (I have the Sony A7111).
