Problem with .mov Files HDR / Dolby iPhone 12 Pro Max Green / Black

Update after some research (6th Posting):

"i did some more testing and found the problem. it looks like that the HDR / Dolby Vision Feature on the iPhone is causing the problem. I tested it with Movie Studio 16 / 17 (Trial) and Pro 18 (Trial). If this feature is deactivated on the iPhone, i can use recorded files.

Here are the files - all recorded with iPhone 12 Max:

HDR / Dolby off (works in MS 16 / 17 & Pro 18)

HDR / Dolby on (green in MS 16 / no Import in 17 / black in Pro 18):

Does somebody know if HDR / Dolby isnt supported by Movie Studio?

Thanks for any help."

First Posting:

Hey there,

i recently upgraded to an iPhone 12 Pro Max. Previously i recorded a lot of things with my iPhone 8. Same settings (4k 60fps).

In Movie Studio Platinum 16 the iPhone 12 files only show up green and the iPhone 8 files are working fine - all in the same project.

Installing the Quicktime Alternative did not solve that problem.

Is this because of the "older" version of Movie Studio Platinum 16?

Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Is this because of the "older" version of Movie Studio Platinum 16?

You can download the free trial of Platinum 17 to find out.

Good point. Does not work neither. in MSP 17 i cant even import the files. Error: "Does not support File Type" (or similar)

According to VLC there is no difference in the used codec. They are recorded in different frame-rates but that should not be the problem.

@mb213
I see difference in fps, but in both they are variable framerate.
A video editor like Vegas does not like variable framerate, but both files have it and the lower fps works and the doubled fps not with you.
I cannot test those files because I don't have them, but will try if you offer here a link to a smal file with the 60fps on a cloudservice where we can download it unharmed to test out on our installations.

the frames are not the problem - i have been using the footage from the iphone 8 over years now with this software.

i did some more testing and found the problem. it looks like that the HDR / Dolby Vision Feature on the iPhone is causing the problem. I tested it with Movie Studio 16 / 17 (Trial) and Pro 18 (Trial). If this feature is deactivated on the iPhone, i can use recorded files.

Here are the files - all recorded with iPhone 12 Max:

HDR / Dolby off (works in MS 16 / 17 & Pro 18)

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xNIzLtUx-hS7THbJIrZmdC0dn8GuyXyH/view?usp=sharing

HDR / Dolby on (green in MS 16 / no Import in 17 / black in Pro 18):

Does somebody know if HDR / Dolby isnt supported by Movie Studio?

Thanks for any help.

For both files in VMS I get the same experience as you.
Both files are working good in my Vegas Pro 18, default installation.
I think you can draw your own conclusions about the possibilities in VMS compared to the latest Pro version.

The problem with the dolby vision with the older versions of Vegas (I assume that j-v got it to work in VP18 which I don't have) is that Dolby vision is not yet (to my knowledge) standardized to how to put that layer into one file. Apple seems to have a proprietary method of doing this.

The guys at MakeMKV can make-shift merge the dolby vision layer into an mp4 and it works sort-of but there's no standard for saving the DV layer into a video file at this time. HDR10 and HLG are standardized, though. Those are free codecs while Dolby Vision is proprietary and requires licenses.

Thank you for testing.

I guess that the Vegas Pro 18 Trial should work like the normal "default installation". So therefore i might have another problem and an upgrade wont fix my issue.

Just to be clear: I installed the Pro 18 Trial Version and did not change any Preference. The HDR File gives me a black preview screen. Any ideas?

j-v wrote on 1/11/2021, 2:00 PM

If the trial version is build 373 then it is the same I use with these most important settings

Sorry, but further I cannot help you.
