Problems with MP4 video imported from Sportscam

JohnAsh wrote on 7/17/2022, 3:38 AM

I bought a cheapish sports camera. Clips from this play fine in VLC but when I import them into VP19 preview from the timeline or project media is very jerky, almost impossible, with a few green frames appearing. When I render using my usual settings, playback is virtually impossible. I tried running one clip through Handbrake but that didn't help. Here are the video properties, any help would be very much appreciated!

Convert it with Handbrake using the production standard preset (keep resolution same as source and framerate constant) and it should work fine. If that's difficult, Shutter Encoder has fewer settings.

Thank you. I have the latest version of Handbrake on Windows and I see a lot of presets but nothing labelled "Standard", the nearest is Fast 1080p30 (Default). I think I can manage the resolution and constant framerate but get lost elsewhere!

Try production standard, scroll way down for it. Change rate factor to a bit less excessive number like 20. See if it works better for you- there is a lot to potentially set.

Found it! Thank you. I'll see how I get on and report back.

I've converted a clip as above but I'm afraid it's no better. Jerky playback and those odd green frames that appear. The converted clip plays perfectly in VLC and no green frames.

In Handbrake, try setting Constant Frame Rate, and Same as Source on the video tab. You are welcome to upload an actual sample to Drive or Dropbox (not Youtube). You can also try disabling s04. See the FAQ.

Sorry for the lack of response. I've been unable to do further tests due to various health appointments but will do so asap. Thank you all!

For jerkiness, in Handbrake, look in the box at bottom under video and all set keyint= equal to the framerate. (i.e. 60)

Not sure about the green flashes, though- that sounds like a GPU decoding issue (assuming they aren't in the source file). Try updating GPU drivers and if that fails, enabling legacy AVC on preferences/ file io or turning hardware decoder to off might help.

Roger and everyone else, thank you! I'll be giving this a try soon. GPU sounds a likely issue for the green frames.thank you.

I really want to thank everyone for their help on this issue. I have been trying various settings in Handbrake with some success. I then realised that the original clips were playing OK-ish without extreme jerkiness and no green frames. I tried a render and that was good. My rather ageing PC was struggling to preview these clips without turning the quality right down which is a bit odd as it copes with HD clips from my new Sony FDR AX53 pretty well. (I have now only just discovered "Create proxy files" would you believe which will help me in the future).

Now, why did the problem of extreme jerkiness and green frames VP19 go away? I was racking my brains as to what I had altered but then realised I had just done a program update, which I'd been putting off for some reason. It must have been that?

If that's the case, I apologise for wasting your time somewhat. But a pretty happy bunny here. Thank you again.
