Question about viewer's attention span

DMT3 wrote on 10/4/2022, 10:28 AM

I am making another "how to" video on a wood project. It is running longer than I hoped so I am trying to trim it. My question though to you who may have more experience or just a personal opinion.
If you have an interest in the subject, how much time are you willing to spend watching a YOUTUBE video?
If I break it into two segments, are you likely to watch part two? or even part three?

Do you check the analytics on your videos to see the normal viewing time spent?

Thanks for any input or feedback.

I regularly watch such videos as I am interested in wood turning, metal turning and making equipment for my - mainly woodworking - hobby workshop.
If a video is very well made, and I am very interested in it, I am willing to invest a maximum of 20 to 25 minutes.
With simpler things I zape away after max. 5-10 minutes.
But dividing the video into several parts doesn't help - it would have to be a large-scale project, e.g. the construction of a garden house, a patio roof or a carport.

How about a link to your channel? Then I could tell you more about my impressions.

If am interested in the subject I will likely watch the whole video even if it's longer. I like videos which are right to the point.

If there is 2 minute intro and another 5 minutes of general talk about nothing + paid promotion, I tend to skip such video.

But that's just my opinion.

@walter-i. That is good information. 20 minutes seems to be my interest span as well. I can link to my channel but it is mostly home movie type stuff. I did a wood project where I showed HOW I built a bookcase, but it wasn't a detailed "how to". I am now making a "how to" video, this is my first attempt at a detailed one. Even though it is not a complicated project (a wooden external hanging lantern for a garden or decoration), it still takes a lot to show. I am trying to trim as much as possible, but it is hard.

@misohoza I get right to the point because I have no sponsors and am not a great talker (I tend to mumble which is something I am working on as I create the video). I appreciate your input. It is opinions that I need.
