Ram

I'm running Vegas Pro 16 in windows 10 with 64 gigs of ram. When I execute a dynamic ram preview, 32 of the 64 gigs of ram are only available to me under the preferences / Video tab. How do I get access to all 64 gigs? is my question. I understand how to set up ram for dynamic preview but I still need to know why I don't have access to all 64 gigs in the options, preferences, video tab. It should be up to me as to how much ram should be allocated.

You really don't need to do anything like that. RAM preview is only for short previews, such as transitions and special fx. If you need longer previews, use a file prerender.

Setting up your cache

From the Options menu, choose Preferences and select the Video tab.

Enter a value in the Dynamic RAM preview (max) box to set the amount of RAM that you want to dedicate to video previews.

The maximum size of the RAM cache is displayed to the right of the control. If you reserve excessive amounts of RAM for your RAM cache, performance may decrease.

Click OK.

Be forewarned, you are about to hear a lot of stories about how much preview RAM to set, most of it placebo.

To quote Monty Python: “And now, for something completely different” there’s the wonderful Happy Otter Scripts Kwik Preview. I’m using this most days to get a quick Suck ‘n See of my creations. Very happy.

The good old sony vegas versions work well and fast with lots of RAM dedicated ( I dedicate 20 GB out of 128 GB ) and are the fastest way to almost instantly preview at full frame rate ( at best , full , 32 bits ) . Am working that way the last 7 years .Especially when using FX's . I wonder why vegas pro 17 is not at all using RAM anymore , even when GPU=OFF , this doesn't work anymore . At my partner's HPZ840 ( quadro M4000 ) with vegas pro 17 ( 421 ) we noticed dynamic RAM preview only working when 8 bit is selected . When 32 bit full range is selected , things get messed-up ( absurd frame rates , stops , crashes ...) . Returnig to 8 bit preview and dynamic preview works again. Now I wonder whether this is a bug since sony vegas 13 does this all without a single issue . And fast.
