RAM Issues and BIOS Updates

MH7 wrote on 5/13/2020, 6:00 AM

Hey guys,

I’m wanting to update my Gigabyte motherboard’s BIOS for better memory compatibility so that I can hopefully run my memory (RAM) at its specific speed of 3200MHz and not just the 2400MHz I currently have it at. Because the current BIOS version I have doesn’t like operating my 32GB (4x8GB) of memory at the 3200MHz with the XMP profile if enabled. It sends my PC around a boot loop until it boots successfully into Windows 10 (build 1909).

My Gigabyte motherboard came with Gigabytes F5 BIOS version installed and I’m hoping I can just update straight to F8 without having to install F6 first. I hope I am making myself clear.

UPDATED AND EDITED POST

I edited my post to get right to the point and remove the waffle for clarification and understanding of what I’m actually asking and wanting help with. I removed all the waffle and now I’m fat from eating it, it was that big. Note to Self: Waffle less next time to prevent self from getting fat.

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. 👍🏻

I'm not sure I know what the question is?

If it is, "Are BIOS upgrades incremental?" the answer is yes.

If it is "Will a BIOS upgrade improve my video editing?" the answer is, "Probably not."

My apologies. I was more detailing my PC problems. But I’ve updated my post with the most important question. I'm so sorry. I don't have a good answer for you.

Is your request for advice related to video editing? If you are asking if running your RAM faster will improve your video editing, the answer is, "No."

LOTS of good resources for motherboards, BIOS, RAM, Overclocking and System Performance here. I say with tongue firmly planted in cheek, the Vegas video forum may not be the best place ...

No worries mate! I think something might be lost in translation, so to speak. I actually updated my original post above with the main question I am asking. I know that AMD RYZEN CPUs do perform better with faster memory. But you’re right, this forum is probably not the best place to ask PC related questions. I know it’s first and foremost a Vegas Pro forum and mostly to do with video editing. I was hoping that there might be someone here able to help me. But, it’s all good. Thanks for your effort in trying to help me. It’s greatly appreciated!

From a "Hardware type of Guy"...

..."If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Same with the BIOS/UEFI for your computer. If it is working for what you want it to do, why mess with it? As @Musicvid said, RAM speed for editing will not make a difference. And no, I will not get in any "superfluous" discussion about this. People can tell me all they want about all the "YouTubers" who do "this or that" to improve their systems, yet you never see them actually using the things for what they are "Preaching".

Yes, the First Round of Ryzen (including ThreadRipper) sucked for memory support. But each manufacturer's page has a listing for "Compatible and Certified" RAM. That is what you should be checking. The other issue with the first rounds of boards, which is still somewhat persistent with even the newer boards, and even platform for AMD, is that you have to be careful on how many actual DIMM slots you populate. ThreadRipper boards are really impacted by this, having a Quad-Channel design (Memory Controller on CPU), so again, the manufacturer page is your friend. Heck, previously, Intel did not have this type of problem, though are seeing the same issue with their X299 HEDT platform. Once again: Check the Manufacturer's Compatibility page!!!!!

Happy Editing!

@Chief24 | Thanks Chief. You know what? You make a good point. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?! That could be someone’s life motto. I don’t know whose, but someones. Perhaps Howie Duit’s. All joking aside, I am pretty sure my memory was on the memory compatibility list of my motherboard (which is mentioned in my OP). I guess I was just hoping to be able run my 32GB (4x8GB) 3200MHz memory at 3200MHz and not 2933MHz or 2400MHz. I will have a look at the my motherboard’s website page and just to make sure. Thanks for your help!

Just a little story: The reason I got aboard the 1st generation RYZEN train is because Intel CPUs have always been rather expensive. At the time of purchasing my PC from PC Case Gear, the i7-7700K (4C/8T) was going for AU$465 vs AU$419 for the AMD RYZEN 7 1700 (8C/16T). So it seemed like a no-brainer to go for the AMD. And performance benchmarks show that the AMD RYZEN 7 1700 outperforms the Intel Core i7-7700K by a significant amount. Editing with the AMD R7 1700 CPU and my RX 580 8GB graphics has been great, along with the some infrequent gaming.

The only problem recently has just been the memory frequency with 4 sticks of 8GB of memory occupying all 4 memory slots. But I guess if it’s working comfortably @ 2400MHz, I could just leave it. Thanks for your input and help once again. It’s greatly appreciated! 👍🏻

I too had a first gen Ryzen computer with Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3 motherboard. I bought 3200 Corsair LED ram and had the boot-reboot as the computer "learned" the RAM speed. It would default back to 2133 each time. What I eventually did is settle with 2666 for the setting and it has been rock stable. I tried 2933 but couldn't get it to stay there.

That computer is doing work at church now with live streaming. My current computer with the Gigabtye X570 Elite and 3900X with Corsair 3200 RGB (yeah... a sucker for the lights, but the price was better than GSkill, etc) and that is exactly what I am running at.

The computer is on 16 hours a day and not one missed beat. But as posted, early Ryzen boards did have memory issues preferring Samsung "B" die over Hynix or any other brand. My Corsair were Hynix....
