Rendered video playback is choppy

Hello!

I have been using this tool for a couple of years. I am at version 14.0, build 148, and have been at this build for at least a month.

Something started happening today when rendering mp4 videos. Any video (I use mp4 usually) that I render plays back choppy. When I say choppy, I mean that frames do not redraw quickly enough and there are dark blocks on my screen until they redraw. The videos do not look choppy in the Preview window.

Previous videos I have rendered with Movie Studio play back fine. The project settings look exactly like they did with projects that rendered videos smoothly last week. My hardware has not changed recently. I mainly use videos of format:

Project settings:
Attributes: 1920x1080
Frame Rate: 59.9 Double NTSC (I tried 29 frame rate)
Field Order: None
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000 (Square)
3d mode: off
Full-res rendering quality: Best (although I tried all)
Deinterlace method: Blend Fields (although I tried all)
GPU Acceleration is off

Video properties (all videos):
1920x1080
59.9 fps
AVC

I have tried different options in Options>Preferences. Everything was rendering perfectly last time I used this tool and I have not manually changed my system. Any suggestions or troubleshooting steps are appreciated.

Thanks

What program are you playing back this MP4 with? If Windows Media Player -- yech! Try VLC Media Player. It's the real deal.

Meantime, which basic template are you using for your output? Main Concept or Magix/Sony?

And do you get the same playback results if you use one of the factory templates without modifying it?

BTW, what processor do you have with how much RAM?

Thanks for the response!

I open them with Media Player, although I have VLC installed. I will try and make sure what I am seeing is not a change with media player and it's related files. Maybe it got updated.

My template is custom. It has the project settings I listed in the first post.

Yes

i7 with 16 GB RAM

So, when I get home, I am going to check it with VLC and make sure it's not a problem with Media Player as suggested. Even though I can play back older videos and they are not choppy, who knows. I will report back. Many thanks.

Do this for both source and rendered files.

Thank you for the post. I will try that today. So, after I installed VLC player (turns out I didn't have it), I was able to render videos smoothly. (even if I didn't play them back with VLC) So maybe VLC installed a codec that was missing or was corrupted? I don't know. I will try the process again tonight and see if it's still smooth or now choppy.

VLC doesn't install system codecs, period.

If you would like more assistance, kindly post your input and output file properties as linked above thanks.

Bitrate is the biggest cause of choppy playback. You don't find that information in project properties!
