rendor to hard drive file that plays back full screen

rocky wrote on 11/4/2019, 8:38 PM

Newbie user, using MS 16 Platinum, and ready to rendor my 1st vid to hard drive. Problem is that all the rendor choices that I've tried... when I replay the rendored file, the vid is only 1/2 screen. I am unable to rendor to where the result file plays in full-screen??? I tried "memory stick" choices (NTSC, PSP Full-screen & QVGA). Advice is greatly appreciated regarding which rendor-choice to choose, in order to create a hard-drive file that plays back in full-screen. Many Thanks for your help !!!

You need to give us more details to work out what you are doing.

What player are you using that only gives half screen. Can you not enlarge it to full screen?

What is your source material and what is its image size?

The PSP Full Screen give an image of only 480x270 which is small. You need a template that produces a size equal to your source material.

So VMS16P is working fine.

Thank you & looking forward to your reply. The DVD powers up and says YesVideo & runs using Power Media Player (I assume pre-installed on PC) ... DVD created by Walgreens of family 16 mm's.  1st I copied the files from a DVD to hard-drive.  Then imported the IFO file into Movie Studeio Platinum 16.  I've tried rendering about 4 diff choices to hard-drive but none play full-screen ... goal is to give other family members a thumb drive copy of the rendered file, so they can play it full-screen on their computer.  Which is the best MS 16 rendor choice for this?  Thank you for your help

If you use the right Project Properties for your Project ( with the dimensions of your sourcefiles) and after your edits you have to make the following steps

Assuming proper encoding, "playing full screen " is a function of your player and screen, not the file. Upsampling does nothing.

I can't, however, "assume proper encoding," because we haven't seen the render properties.

@rocky Unfortunately you didn't answer my earlier post asking about your source material image size. You now mention 16mm which I suspect means your source has a 4:3 aspect ratio. This of course will not fill a modern 16:9 aspect ratio screen, unless you stretch the image (making everything look wide) or crop the image (losing part of the top and bottom).

So let's start from scratch. Please explain what you mean by "the vid is only 1/2 screen". An illustration would help.

rocky wrote on 11/10/2019, 7:00 PM

I do not know how to answer the question, "source material image size". How can I find that out? I don't know how to find out 4:3 or 16:9. I do not know what any of that means, but I'm glad to learn if you'll show me how to find out? I gave walgreens a bunch of 16 mm's and walgreens gave me back a DVD. I would be happy to attach a print-screen of what I mean by "vid only 1/2 screen", however, I do not see an "attach a file" icon above the window that I'm typing in now? I greatly appreciate your patience & help.

j-v, The print-screen was helpful & I found that nicely. I do not understand how or where to "use the right Project Properties for your Project ( with the dimensions of your sourcefiles) " ??? Where do I find out "what" to enter/choose, and where do I enter/choose those options? Or is there a link to a webpage showing me that? Sorry to be a pain, but I appreciate & thank you for your help

Hellooooo again, Rocky!

If you are uncomfortable posting this information and a screenshot for both source and output, there is little Eric can do to help you. I agree, you "may" be mistaking aspect ratio for screen ratio, but just how the heck would we know?

All of your answers are here. Gotta start somewhere.

It's this one: Then browse to your file and then Confirm.

Normally by adding sourcefiles to an empty project you will be asked if the program sets the project automatic to those settings by this pop-up

to be sure you can always use this button(2) in the properties window(1)

when you use that button it askes you to point at the right file on your storage location.

j-v, After selecting "make a movie" then choosing "mp4"... MS 16 rendered for hours, then returned an error window with the message: "The selected codec does not support the current render settings". Let me follow-up on all of the links that folks have kindly supplied, and I will reply tomorrow. Thank you very much for your courtesy.

rocky wrote on 11/11/2019, 6:34 AM

EricLNZ, Thank you for those links. I am anxious to read them when I come home from work tonight. I must do, due diligence & you're right ... I gotta start somewhere! One quick question - When you keep saying that you need info about "my file", are you referring to the IFO file b-e-f-o-r-e it comes into MS 16 ... OR ... are you referring to the file after it is imported within MS 16? Many thanks, and I'll write back tomorrow, after digesting those links tonight. Thank you for the schooling

rocky wrote on 11/11/2019, 6:39 AM

fayfen, thank you for that helpful link. Now I understand what that means. P.S. I like your emoji - we just returned from Disneyland yesterday. My favorite shirt was not "The happiest place on earth", but I saw a guy wearing a shirt that said, "Most expensive place on earth". Haaaaaa

rocky wrote on 11/12/2019, 7:13 PM

EricLNZ, Thank you for replying... I'm eager to try what you recommended. P.S. I did not intentionally post to 2 different threads (I must have hit a link from a former "cheat note" of mine) - Sorry about that. I will reply tomorrow letting you know how it goes - THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH for the courtesy & generous advice.

EricLNZ, I do not know how to get to the screen-shot that you provided (window header says "Custom Settings...". I've attached a screen-shot of the screen I'm looking at. From the screen in the attachment, I've tried pulling down the Project, then selecting Properties (no luck), then I tried clicking the sprocket above the vid-dispayed (but still nothing says "Custom Settings")? Can you please tell me how to navigate to "Custom Properties" window that you supplied, so that I can begin typing what you recommended? My MS 16 is build 142 if that helps. Many thanks

EricLNZ wrote on 11/12/2019, 8:58 PM

Aaaagh - your image shows your probable problem. You have your video on the Picture-in-picture track!!!!! Move it down to the underneath video track and delete the PIP track. Or else go into the PIP track effects (on the left) and untick or delete the PIP fx. It's a trap for the unwary and I wish Vegas didn't by default have this confusing track. You are not the first to have this problem.

To answer your question:

Click on "Make Movie" in the top toolbar
Select "Save it to my hard drive", the bottom option
Click on "Advanced Options", on the right
Wait a few secs for the "Render as" templates to load then select MagixAVC/AAC MP4 and Internet HD 720p 29.97 fps Click on Customise Template at the bottom

You should the have what I showed in the other post.

I can't wait to try this & will reply after I try this tonight. I am so appreciative for all you have taught me.

EricLNZ, You nailed it (&heartfelt thanks to all who replied). The rendered hard drive file turned out exactly as the DVD version. Thank you, thank you, thank you. My next feat will be to try to make a DVD (after I review the tutorials again). Utmost thanks for not giving up on me, your patience, and kindness. "until next time" … Wholehearted Thanx!

@rocky

I'm sure @EricLNZ appreciates your kind words. The most durable "Thank You" in this setting comes by marking his reply as "The Solution," a choice that you control.

Thanks @rocky @Musicvid I've tagged it as a solution.

Rocky - before you start your DVD come here and start a new thread telling us exactly what you want to do. I'm concerned you might try to use your mp4 files to make your DVD. Mp4 is not part of the DVD specs so they will get re-rendered again. As far as possible you should use the vob files and then DVDA will put them onto a new disc for you without any re-rendering so quality will not be lost. Very important when dealing with SD material and files that change the image PAR (Pixel aspect ratio).
