Scariest 5 minutes EVER...file disappeared..lost EVERYTHING!

FoskeyMedia wrote on 10/14/2017, 2:43 PM

Working on a major project with bad raw footage so a lot of editing magic. 3 weeks of sleepless nights. Vegas crashed..it does that from time to time when I tax it too much... but I save often... but this time when I go to open the file!!!! That has NEVER happened before. The file was GONE!!! It disappeared like Jimmy Hoffa (if you're not old enough to get that reference Google it) What could have caused that????
Thank GOD I didn't panic and was able to just rename the .bak file and had everything I needed, but WOW!!!! Way to go into cardiac arrest.
It's always good to back up, know your options and be prepared....but does anyone know the cause? Has it happened to you?

FOR ANYONE THIS MAY HAPPEN TO...MY SOLUTION WAS... I FIND THE FILE WITH THE SAME NAME BUT A .bak EXTENTION, CHANGED .bak TO .veg AND THEN OPENED IT AND SAVED IT AGAIN JUST TO BE SAFE

Good point. I hadn't thought about multiple files...but the .veg files are so small why not.

I always Save and Save-As, and make permanent backup save after one point of editing. Besides, VEG are extremely small size and flexible.

I use Vegasaur's automatic backup utility. I'm sure there are others, but it's saved my fanny a few times. Also, many are unaware of Windows ability to create a an image backup of any drive. If a project is really critical it's worth doing it once in a while so you're whole system could be restored if necessary. For the cost of storage it's almost foolish not to do it.

I use Edward Troxel’s saving utility which auto saves based on veg name changes, periods of time and my activity. It also allows me to add notes too. MrT’s Auto save, don’t leave home without it.

I copy my active veg files to a different drive with a date suffix at the end of every day I do any work on them. I also have Vegasaur doing regular auto-backups.

I save incrementally in case I screw something up and don't want to go through a million Undo operations. Especially with challenging audio mixes, I may have saved 15-20 backups before my first master.

Save Early, Save Often.

I always split up a large editing project in several smaller subprojects.

In response to the original post, a crash resulting in a file disappearing is more often a sign of impending hard drive failure, rather than a software issue, in my experience with Vegas. Just something to keep in mind.
