Single Rank Or Dual Rank RAM For Vegas Pro 19

Hi, I want to increase my Dell Alienware laptop from its current 16GB DDR4 3200MHz (two x 8GB) to its maximum 32GB (two x 16Gb).

The current RAM in the laptop is shown to be single rank. I used the CPU-Z app to identify that. I have a choice of obtaining either single rank or dual rank replacements. Unfortunately there is a ton of conflicting information online regarding which is best; probably boils down to dual may be slightly faster but single runs cooler. Appears to be that gamers may prefer dual rank but over-clockers may prefer single rank. Don't know what over-clocking gamers do - and there must be a lot of those!

But the crux may be what apps are actually used. I have no interest in gaming but I do use Vegas a lot, recently updated to VP19 and to Windows 11. I also use Resolve 17 Studio (the paid for version) to a lesser extent. The system is AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with Nvidia RTX3060. The main SSD is the Dell supplied 1TB NVMe and recently I added an internal Crucial 2TB NVMe.

Since dual rank RAM apparently runs hotter than single rank would that slow down when using Vegas and lessen the point of having 32GB RAM rather than 16GB and a decent GPU. Thanks.

Vegas uses RAM mainly for buffers and temporary storage, pretty mundane really. In those roles, I would be surprised if the seek and read demands are enough to make any difference. CPU / GPU performance is far more important in video editing.

Thanks for clarifying that; I had been hoping one of the expert members such as yourself would put it to rest for me :- ) Another member had replied but he took it down again shortly afterwards, possibly had mixed up Dual Rank with Dual Channel. The new RAM through Dell was a significant cost at around £300 so I wanted to ensure I'd actually achieved improvements. But then found that Crucial UK does it on Amazon at only £120 so bought and installed it just now. There was nothing in the Crucial packaging to identify whether single or dual rank and their web pages were down but CPU-Z shows I've received dual channel single rank.

Just looked at Vegas 19 preferences out of curiosity. Dynamic RAM Preview max shows at 10273mb 32% of 32104. Perhaps that is a VP19 default. Sometimes I read threads about Dynamic Ram if I'm feeling masochistic but my workflow is not that complex to be in need of it :- )

I have never seen any controlled testing of such a thing in Vegas and am doubtful it makes any difference. Ensure the system as a whole is adequately cooled when CPU and GPU are both under load.
