Transferring DVD videos to a USB drive

DMT3 wrote on 12/21/2022, 11:15 AM

I have several DVDs of home movies back to the 1950s that I would like to transfer to a USB drive. The problem that I see is keeping them chronological. Has anybody used or seen a viable naming convention that would allow me to keep the description of the particular scene but keep them in order in a drive? Thanks for any suggestions.

Sorry, I meant to post in Off Topic, if the moderator wants to move it, that is fine.

I always start my file names with "year month day" YYMMDD (so stuff recorded today would be "221221 rest of file name".) Or you could do YYYYMMDD (so stuff recorded today would be "20221221 rest of file name".) or add dashes to make it a little easier to read (so stuff recorded today would be "2022-12-21 rest of file name".)

Then when you sort the files by name, they will always be listed in date order.

For example:

I wasn't sure if that would work if the last part (after the date) was different.

@DMT3, it will sort the part after the date by whatever you put. In my example above, I added -01, -02, -03 on the ones with the same date to "keep them in order on that date". So if you have a bunch on the same date and need those in a specific order, that could work there as well. Sorted by date and then by item within that date instead of alphabetically on that date.

DVD movies are too large to store but a few on USB thumb drives, or MiniSD for that matter -- I converted mine in Handbrake to more reasonable sizes -- 1-2 GB.

@Musicvid DVD movies are no more than 4GB, I have a 64GB thumb drive so that should store close to 16 DVDs.

@jetdv I am trying a few right now to see what I need to retain the order. Thanks for your input.

Depends on your needs. I put 50 movies on a 64 GB MicroSD for my tablet.

right now I have 10 DVDs of family movies ranging from 8mm transfer up to DV Digital videos (in there are some mini-vhs and 8mm video tape). My parents were early users of VHS for home movies.
