Undo multi-camera editing

WestsideSteve wrote on 12/22/2016, 3:37 PM

I've created the multi-camera track and gone through the entire project switching from camera to camera B. Now I'm taking a selection from the long project and mixing it down into a single song. Can I undo the switches I've made even after it has been saved?

Thank you

Not easily.

The trick is to copy all raw media tracks to new ones first, then create multicamera from the first set of tracks. That way you've got a clean set to revert to.

Saving many incremental project backups doesn't hurt, either.

LOL yes I'm kicking myself in the ass for not shaving before I did the multi-camera editing.

Thanks

Vegas Pro's save file (.VEG) are relatively small and no temporary folders created... so you can have multiple files and save-as. 🙂

Actually it's quite easy to undo a multicam edit and retain the synchronization between the cameras. Go to an event in the multicam track that has all cameras. Highlight and copy it. Insert a new video track and past the event at the same location on the new track. Now you can stretch out that event to it's full length.

Go back to the multicam track, change the "take" and do the same steps with all the takes. That will give you all cameras on separate tracks, aligned and in sync.

@OldSmoke, there is Expand to multiple tracks command in menu, does it do what you described?

OldSmoke wrote on 12/23/2016, 1:36 PM

@altervic. Not sure, I think it does retain the cuts and you are asked if you would like to keep the muted portions of the video event or not. I don't think it will restore the full video clips length per camera like you had before you created the multicam track.

Would be a convenient feature to have.😉

Edit:

I can now confirm that the "Expand to multiple tracks" command does not restore the complete files but leaves the cuts intact and you can choose to delete the muted portions or not.

It is time-consuming as **** to work on the expanded tracks in order to revert to previous edit states.

Just copy and paste a group of raw, synchronized tracks to new ones, as originally suggested. Then open one set, with or without audio edit, keeping the backup as-is.

Wish list..
Please make it possible to 'undo' those muted clips (make them active) .... if you want to go back and make some adjustments in the 'expanded track' mode. Having to re-copy an entire project to re-do is not fun...

Musicvid wrote on 12/27/2016, 7:32 AM

Teaktart,

Vegas is already pushing the envelope on buffers for many users' systems including mine.

One wouldn't necessarily find the process fun or productive even if there were expanded editing features on the multicam track.

In a single-machine editing system, buffers are expensive. Veg filles are cheap. Save early, save often. I always save 15+ project increments, with the milestone versions clearly identified. There is no disgrace in starting over!

Ah, kids. Always on stage.

Actually, I gave up on shaving before editing some time back, because nobody seemed to notice...

Obviously, making a copy of the MC project before you start editing is the easiest method to get to the beginning if you want to do a complete re-edit, but it's still very easy to do that without copying. Just expand to multiple tracks (don't choose the muted tracks option) then go to the second event for each camera, right click 'select all to end'. Delete. Then just drag out the first clip/event to the end. All will still be in sync. About 30secs max.
