Vegas 17 : h264 Mkv failed to render as Magix intermediate 422HQ 1080p

Marty111 wrote on 10/5/2019, 10:32 PM

Good morning everyone!

I'm trying to cut out some extracts from a Mpeg4 (h264) mkv 1856x1056 (1877:1056) 23.976fps video.
The mkv opened fine in Vegas the preview was hard but I just needed to cut out some pieces. Now I'm trying to render these pieces as Magix intermediate 422 HQ 1080p 23.976 video, and I get this error message : An error occurred while creating the media file *****.mov An invalid argument was specified.

What do you think? Has it something to do with mkv or is it something else ?

Renders fine at my PC with VPro17. As requested in your other thread, an analyze with Mediainfo of your original xvid or mkv file will give us more details. Now we can only guess, what I refuse.

Shouldn't be a problem, when rendered to 1920x1080.

Use the Tree or the Text view of Mediainfo of the original MKV File, (not of the Vegas rendered output). Example of view: Which will give much more details about your file.

Because it doesn't preview well in Vegas, so I need an intermediate. Also I read somewhere that because mkv in Vegas is experimental, it could crash the project. Anyway I will need to render it in the end so...

As I said above, render settings : Magix intermediate 422 HQ 1080p 23.976fps
To be more precise for the "video rendering quality" setting in the project tab of the render window I picked "best" instead of "use project settings, and in the audio tab I unchecked the "include audio" box.

It's exactly what I expected, you're working with very compressed (bitrate only 2,5 Mbps) files rendered by Handbrake. Handbrake removed the black top and bottom bars, that's why the file has an unusual resolution.

For me it's absolute ridiculous to convert those to intermediates for further editing, (shit cannot be turned into gold).

Marty111 wrote on 10/6/2019, 12:54 AM

@Sylk : I have an AMD GPU (Just in case it matters)
I have the choice between "Intel QSV" and "NVidia NVDEC". Right now "Intel QSV" is selected.
What does it do exactly ?
"Enable hardware decoding for supported formats" and Enable mkv reader (experimental)" are both checked.
@3POINT : It's not like I can tell the guy who encoded it to do it again, it's a torrent so... I actually found and downloaded the same video but in smaller format just in case the mkv wouldn't work with vegas : it's avi xvid, and the resolution is weird too (624x352). On both video you can see awful ghosting so the guy really did a shitty job, but I have no choice, it's an old tv program so no way to find it anywhere else.

Marty111 wrote on 10/6/2019, 1:42 AM

I just tried to render it with XAVC-I and it worked. Is it gold now? I hope it will play good during my further editing. The rendered video plays fine in mpchc.

No it's still shit (sorry for the word), you only increased the bitrate (and filesize) extremely, which doesn't make gold out of it. Your final product will be more than ten times the size of the (bad) "original" with no viewable better quality.

Marty111 wrote on 10/6/2019, 2:27 AM

Yes quality will still be crap. You know I'm the first one being sorry about it. It's rare to find some neat high res content to illustrate my music. Somehow I hope these crappy encoded videos will have some charm of their own in 50 years or so, the same way old movies and old songs of poor quality from a century ago are still fine to watch and listen although they were recorded with low res gear. But I don't really believe it :/

Rather than the quality of the image itself which indeed is definitively deteriorated, I was referring to the playability of the now XAVC-I file.

Musicvid wrote on 10/6/2019, 6:09 AM

All drama aside, just use mkvextract / mkvtoolnix to pull the original mp4 from the mkv wrapper, and be done with it. XAVC and 422 are heavily inflated (unnecessary) intermediates for your average source.

Also, look at your math. The rule of fours is true for many MOV formats as well. Since 1856/1056 != 16/9, your anamorphic width is ~1877. It's easy to forget to pay attention to this stuff.

It's rare to find some neat high res content to illustrate my music.

Unless you shoot it yourself.

Marty111 wrote on 10/6/2019, 7:12 AM

"Unless you shoot it yourself."
Great idea. Do you still make these fine Dolorean cars in the States ? 'Cause I need to travel back to a few places in time.

Thanks a lot for the tool Musicvid! It will be very useful (no irony here).
I think the xavc will be ok for that particular project though, It's only a few extracts. I noticed the 16/9 ratio, it wasn't precisely 16/9 but extremely close indeed. The guy who encoded the mkv probably had to make an approximate cut of some kind to remove the black top and bottom bars that @3POINT mentioned.

Musicvid wrote on 10/6/2019, 7:28 AM

Yes, it was made anamorphic in a very strange way. Did someone mention you are downloading crap?

We're hoping you settle on some standard formats and display ratios. Soon if possible.
