VEGAS Crash while trying to import > 100 HEVC 4K files from GoPro7

Kamienios wrote on 1/8/2020, 10:15 AM

HEllo,

My VEGAS 16 b.424 crash every time i try to import a big number of HEVC files.

Does not matter if I try to import them al at once, or trying to import with eg. packages by 20. Then first 2/3 packages are OK, but next one crash.

It crash in different ways:

1. Just close the app with no information

2. Display information: "An error occured while opening one or more files. Error 0x80040007 (message missing)

3. Crash the application with unhandled exception

Also after this crash whole windows system remains unstable, other application are not working problely or not starting. Sometimes some display driver crash and resolution changes and so on.

I`ve tested it on two laptops.

1. I7-6770HQ, 16GB RAM

2. I7-9750H, 16GB RAM

The second one is brand new laptop with fresh windows and Vegas installation. Problem is just the same on both of them.

I`ve tried to do the same (import all files) to Resolve 16 at the second machine, and all process went very smooth and fast so it`s not the case of the machine itself...

Since the same operation work very fluent on Resolve, is there any way I can fix Vegas to work with this files? Or my ony solution is to start styuing Resolve...

Thank You,

Peter

Import from Hard drive to project. Tested on serverl hard drives, Inclusing M.2 laptop internal hard drive.

Total size of files is 28GB. Total number of files 163

With Vegas you can import files from the Windows Explorer into the timeline, from the Vegas explorer into the timeline and from Project Media to the timeline after put them into Project Media. That was my question, but when I see you are trying to use 28 GB of very difficult to decode files, I think it is too much for a laptop.
Maybe a workaround is to use different Vegs and combine them later to a total project.

Thanks. I do need to have them in one project for smooth workflow. Maybe I`ll just transcode them to H.264. However, there is no issue with such amount of files on Resolve :/ Anyway, if it`s the hardware issue - what exactly? I7-9750 is pretty powerfull new processor. There might be more RAM, but 16GB shall at least not crash the software in my opinion.

Did you ever use "nested" Vegs later joining to a total project?
With heavy files with more than 4 tracks I always use. Never see a problem also not on my laptop and my 4K GOPro 7 HEVC 50p files.
But if you don't want to use this option >>>> your choice, good luck with a good product.

Does your issue persist when you first let Vegas create proxies of your HEVC files?

I don't know, but I think it a Windows setting how to use and free your memory, because with me and 4K HEVC GoPro 7 files it goes this way on my laptop from signature and 8 GB RAM installed with a total of 1h 15 minutes, look

I think Kamienios problem depends on the amount of imported HEVC files and not the duration of the project.

I think the same and that's why I adviced him to work with "nested" vegs.

A project with about 100 or even more files should also be possible without nesting. It would be not the first time that there a memory issues in Vegas when importing a lot of clips. Maybe Vegas team should have a look at it.

Probably not when this issue doesn't occur in the present Vegas version.

Kamienios wrote on 1/8/2020, 5:19 PM

Thank You both for discussion.

Unfortunatelly, I`m not able to go to the point in which I can work with nested sequnces nor proxies. I`m just not able to add all files to the project, So I canno start working with it anyhow.

J-V, on the video You posted there is only maybe 20 files. Can You please try to load ~150 HEVC files to the project and check if it fails? My files are mostly very short like 5-10 sec. Some of them may have 30-60 sec.

I also tried with Vegas 17 up to date build as demo, but it was even worse.

Is there any way i can get some support from vendor? I do have a legal copy of software and really need a help with this.

You may think about providing media info for your footage.

Also, you can try:

- Import fewer files in a bunch. Add more files later on. It is possible that one file is somehow broken and this cause the VP's reader failure.

- Disable HW decode

- Disable so4

There is a confirmed bug with the HEVC plugin in vegas 17 that the admins are aware of. I to get the same issue and sent my entire project to the MAGIX team where they were able to reproduce the crash. They are working on a fix for the next update. If you own 16 this bug is not present. If not, you gotta wait it out..

@LongIslanderrr So if they fix it in Vegas the fix will only be made to Vegas 17? Looks like there is no chance to have a fix in Vegas 16? How did you manage to contact them directly? Adn can You please post the workaround that they mentioned in the message to You?

@fifonik Adding the files in smaller packages don`t work. It just fail on 3rd or 4th package. Looks like the limit is not related to number of imported files at once, rather to total number of HEVC files in the project.

- Disable HW decode
- Disable so4

Will try later today and come back if it helped.

Thanks

Musicvid wrote on 1/9/2020, 8:11 AM

Total size of files is 28GB.

Bits/(Pixel*Frame)                       : 0.158

8/0.158 *28 = 1417.72

You see, when editing, Vegas unpacks your compressed HEVC to raw bits, resulting in >1417 GB of actual data, a good portion of which is buffered in virtual memory at any time. Since decoding GoPro HEVC in real time is not exactly easy on your system, Vegas can be overwhelmed by lots of material.

That's why we have proxies, prerenders, and digital intermediates to facilitate editing and processing. Experiment, and choose the one that best suits your workflow.

Kamienios wrote on 1/9/2020, 9:48 AM

Thanks.

So what would be Your workflow in such situation? Asking about Your specific, since I`m an amateour and would like to learn from more experienced.

Nornally I use proxy using Vegasaur plugin to create proxies using Cineform Coded. But in this case I was unable to do so, because Vegasaur can only make proxy from project media already imported to project.

Any tips will be welcome.

Thanks

3POINT wrote on 1/9/2020, 10:16 AM

With Vegasaur you could batch convert your HEVC files to XAVC or whatever, with Vegasaur quick render option. There is no need to import all your HEVC files at once, you can do that in several portions. After converting, start importing and editing with the XAVC files.

Trying to give you an answer did take a while because I'm on vacation now and have only my laptop with me, but I found a bunch of that type of files of my GOPro from another holiday with a total of 322 GB, I put into a map with the name Test on my normal harddisc of 2 TB.
There are a total of 91 4K files which I imported first in Project Media.
Trying to enter them all in Vegas Pro 16 gave al kind of freezes, maybe the same you saw.
In VPro 17 latest build it was no problem to import them all at once with a total lenght of more than 12 hours.
Look how that went in VPro 17 on laptop from signature with 8 GB of available RAM:
