Vegas Effects

Does anyone know if Vegas Effects is supposed to support the same AE plugins as it's parent, Hit Film pro? I am keen to try working with Video Copilot's Saber, and given the pretty much identical folder layout in Vegas Effects, I tried following the Hit Film Pro instructions for getting the plugin to (custom) install. But it never appears in the Vegas Effects effects menu. Is this feature deliberately left out? Broken? If left out does anyone know if it is going to be reinstated in upcoming updates?

Ask FXHome? I don't have AE plugins to test.

I've noticed over the time since Vegas Post was released there haven't been all that many replies - if any - to questions on the forum about Vegas Effects issues.

Maybe mentioning AE plugins - but without identifying those plugins - makes it too wide a question. There is a YouTube tutorial re Vegas Effects from a year or so ago which shows in one of the screen shots of the VFX window a whole range of BorisFX BCC plugins (OFX version) in Vegas Effects - even though HitFilm Pro / Vegas Effects isn't listed on BorisFX's compatibility webpage as being compatible with those programs.

Perhaps contact Video CoPilot to find out about their compatibility advice about Vegas Effects.

I did identify the key one - VideoCopilot's Sabre.

I've been in touch with both VideoCopilot and FXHome. Both referred me back to Vegas. A Support Request to Vegas got no reply ...

>a whole range of BorisFX BCC plugins
Yep! I have the full Boris Continuum OFX suite, and it all works fine in Vegas Effects despite as you say, it not being specifically acknowledged on their compatibility page.

And sadly the latest release - 3.1.12120 - of Vegas Effects still doesn't support the AE plugins that the parent version does.

(namely:

Video Copilot Element 3D
Video Copilot Saber
Video Copilot Orb
Video Copilot Optical Flares
Video Copilot Heat Distortion
Red Giant Trapcode Particular)

Vegas Effects is for Vegas Creative Software, a proprietary software.

AE plugins are for Adobe AfterEffects, a proprietary competing software.

The .OFX extension alone does not suggest compatibility for either, both or any proprietary software, although it may occur coincidentally.

It's sad but hope VEGAS Effects will be more "open" to support AE plugins. Not happy that development of Post programs (Effects and Image) is... slow.

I understand that you can get this to work in Hitfilm but not VE, but they are different, so I'm not sure you can blame Vegas solely for this though, when i bought my Boris stuff i had to choose between OFX or Adobe, 98% of my plugins work in the programs i've had (not Adobe) so I think it's more about the difference between every one else & Adobe, I'd blame VideoCopilot for not creating an OFX option,

Vegas Effects is rreally just a licenced rebranding of the Hit Film Pro compositor, with some minor reskinning. This is shown in the copyright notice in About, and was also made clear in the original announcement back in April 2019. The Vegas version slightly lags behind the FXhome release, but is pretty much the same thing.

Here, for example, are the highlights from the release notes for the most recently released version of HitFilm Pro (Version 2021.3) back in December:

  • The new Rough Edges effect adds organic variation to the edges of the alpha channel of a clip.
  • The new Water Caustics effect procedurally generates animated patterns of reflection and refraction, to simulate looking through water.
  • The new Edge Distortion effect creates line boil, adding movement to the lines or edges within your clip.
  • The new Pencil Sketch effect makes your clip look as if it was drawn with pencil on paper.
  • Improved the quality of timeline cache renders.
  • Users can now choose whether the timeline cache is encoded and decoded with software or GPU hardware.
  • The YouTube export presets have been updated to improve quality in exported files.
  • The prompt for automatic proxy creation no longer appears when creating a new project.

And here are the highlights from tuesday's release of VEGAS Effects 3.1.12120.38408,:

You may spot some similarities ...

>AE plugins are for Adobe AfterEffects

Sure - but the FXhome software engineers had found a way to get certain AE plugins (the ones I listed in my previous post) working in HitFilm Pro's compositor. Which is what prompted my curiosity about this in the first place -if the feature exists why has it been (deliberately?) disabled in the Vegas-branded version?

>The .OFX extension alone does not suggest compatibility

Not sure what point is being made here. My question had nothing to do with OFXs

Think I may have found a reason it won't be enabled - looks like FXhome have announced they are dropping AE plugin support for the next release of Hit Film Pro, so why enable functionality in the Vegas-branded offshoot that is subsequently going to be removed from the codebase.

I'm not sure if there is a licensing thing to keep AE plugin support? Also, with the next version of HFP, the integration that is now available with Vegas Pro and Hitfilm will be removed too.

Very true, as will HitFilm Pro's direct integration with Vegas Pro (I think it goes back to Sony days - VP12 ???) end with the next HFP update (as listed in the update notes with the last major update to HFP in late December last year).

But looking at CoPilot's website, compatibility with HitFilm Pro is not mentioned - https://www.videocopilot.net/support/category/compatibility/ It does however list their plugins that work in Vegas Pro.

If CoPilot's plugins work in HitFilm Pro for you, that's good - but they're not guaranteed to work by CoPliot's compatibility page with HitFilm Pro - thus VE could be even more problematic.

An old adage I heard from an experienced programmer a long time ago is:
"The various manufacturers don't intentionally make each other's lives easy."
This has apparently not changed much in recent times......

So we can't expect products from different manufacturers to interact without complaint, we can only be happy when they do.
