VEGAS FEATURE REQUEST: Move Event to End

pinnaclepro wrote on 6/6/2020, 6:32 AM

Something that would really help when working with lots of short clips(events) is a feature with a keyboard shortcut that sends the selected event(s) to the end of the project on the timeline. This would allow sending an event(s) that is not needed at the current time-frame on the timeline to the end, for potential use later in the project. There are work-arounds to this of course (move to a muted track above or below), but with a keyboard shortcut this would save a lot of time having to grab the mouse and either drag it to another track, or drag it clear to the end of the timeline. I'm envisioning a shortcut that would work in tandem with the arrow keys, where the right arrow would send to end, up arrow to track above, down arrow to track below. Thanks for considering.

In Vegas there is a much better way if you organize your workflow in a different way, f.i through Project Media with or without added tags and before you put something on your timeline.

An interesting suggestion which obviously the OP would find useful.

For me, I much prefer moving the currently unwanted video or audio event down to a lower track and muting it. Almost always, I end up deleting it anyway.

I can see the advantage of the OP's suggestion for a short project, but a lot of my projects are hours long and, if directing them to the end of the TL, I'd be spending a lot of time trying to find their original position on the TL if wanting to use them again.

BTW - notice the OP's user name, especially when its been specifically chosen by the OP for a Vegas Pro forum. Interesting.

I'm with j-v on this one. My "might use" media goes in a custom bin. Putting it at the end of the timeline would be inconvenient.

Maybe Pinnacle doesn't have Media bins? Not all editors do.

You would run a risk of having a false ending on your timeline, making renders too long. It would be important to be able to clean up any video pushed to the end.

Dexcon wrote on 6/6/2020, 8:15 AM

@Former user  ... a very good point. If cleaning up before rendering is overlooked, all those currently unwanted events whizzed to the end may end up in the final render.

j-v's suggestion is great, but its not the way I edit. I do a 'rough-cut' edit which will be way longer than the desired length of the end project. I'll then fine-edit it progressively quite often many times, and many events or sequences will be shortened or even deleted along the way.

I don't think that there is any right or wrong to the OP's suggestion or j-v's suggestion. All I pointed out is that while it may work well for the OP, it wouldn't work well for me.

Dot is correct. You can't "mute" an event. You would never use such a feature again after the first time you forget to set the loop region. 110% impractical.

Ever tried rendering a subclip?

Might my suggestion be too difficult or unwanted by OP he can do this the fasted way with auto ripple selected

- copy that event (Ctrl+C)

- go to the end of the timeline (Ctrl+>)

- paste (Ctrl+V)

Thanks for all the input everyone. I do truly appreciate the comments, even if my workflow differs from others. I've been using Vegas for 15+ years now, but I'm always open to other/better techniques.

My general workflow normally consists of loading a clip into the Trimmer, marking any Regions that I think have a good chance of being used, and pressing 'A' to send it to the Timeline. This forces me to watch all footage, and keeps the Timeline clear of any unwanted footage. As @Dexcon surmised, this is for shorter highlight videos, often wedding highlights. I could see where this could get out of control for larger projects.

@j-v, your latest post with the video is pretty much exactly what I want to do. And, part of the reason I posted this was to see if any of the excellent editors on here already knew a way to do this. Thanks.

I do use the muted video/audio track method quite a bit also, so moving up and down would also work well for me. Thanks @KenB for reminding me of this shortcut.

Any other good editing methods related to Timeline workflow, I'm all ears.

Oh, and my username is just short for the company I own, Pinnacle Productions...but, it does work well with Vegas Pro :)

It would be easy to write a macro which does …

… cut the selected events (Ctrl+X), move the cursor to end of timeline (Ctrl+End), paste the events (Ctrl+V).

Marco. wrote on 6/6/2020, 11:47 AM

Here is such a macro (download no longer available). It is designed to work with Vegas Pro 17 only. Use "Alt+E" to trigger it after you selected the events.

Only downside is it will keep the empty space between the selected events after having been moved to the end. You could use the Vegas Pro core command "Close Gaps" (via right-clicking into the track) after.

Fair enough.

But thank you for pointing out the 8 / 2 keystroke actions. I wasn't aware of that like probably a gzillion other shortcuts as well. I am sure that I will make good use of 8 and 2 from now on.

It looks like many antivirus apps and sever scanners see compiled AHK (AutoHotKey - a macro scripting software) scripts as either virus or trojan infected. Thus the servers blocks the EXE I linked above. I then can only offer the raw AHK script which is useless if you don't have AHK installed.

Using the Contour Shuttle is another way to serve Vegas Pro with these triple command cue.

Marco. wrote on 6/7/2020, 10:55 AM

Another try. I updated AHK (there's a new compiler in it, I think), re-compiled the scipt and uploaded again.

Indeed, but any decent gaming keyboard or mouse can store keystrokes, mouse clicks and/ or macros and assign them to a dedicated hardware key or button. For example, the Logitech G915, G910 or the already mentioned contour controller.

Personally i always found Project Media to be more of a liability than an asset. It seems to get in my way more than help. Dunno, i guess that's just me. I organize before i edit. I create a folder for all the project's media and put it there before it goes on the timeline. If necessary, i might create subfolders for chapters, things used in only specific parts of the project, and items that may or may not be of use. True, these folders and their contents might change after editing has commenced, but still, if i decide on a change, i add and move things around in the folders first, before putting them on the timeline.

That way, any time i need to go look for something, i just browse through the explorer window and there's all my stuff, organized and ready to go. I have never found a need to move things "out of the way" on the timeline. If i'm not using it right now, i delete it. It's still listed down in the explorer window for instant recall, and there's no risk of it ended up in the project if i decide not to use it.

Dexcon wrote on 6/8/2020, 7:29 AM

@Chienworks  ... Welcome back. I much appreciated your input to the forum all those years ago.

I organize before i edit. I create a folder for all the project's media and put it there before it goes on the timeline. If necessary, i might create subfolders

That's similar to what I do. Every video and audio source has its own Windows folder, and the sub-folders are the dates on which the recordings were made. Because the Sony AX100 doesn't remember video clip names on changing memory cards (though it does for stills), I rename all of them in a sequential number order using Bulk Rename Utility. There are individual folders for all post prod processes such as RX projects and renders, BCC presets, HitFilm projects and renders, SpectraLayer renders, NBFX Titler Pro projects, Mercalli SAL renders, etc, etc. And VP's timeline tracks are often but not always based on the source of the media. For instance, all AX100 tracks have a color grade at track level to add a slight bit of red.

It's not all that hard to do folder-wise because I have a default .veg project file with all the tracks included dedicated to the source media and post prod renders, though this of course can be revised - additions and deletions - as need be.

The main use of Project Media is to clear the project from media that is no longer used on the timeline, but also occasionally to locate or replace an event on the TL.
