Vegas Movie Studio 14 .mov files problem

Cobaltmotari wrote on 8/18/2017, 6:03 AM

I have recently had Windows reinstalled due to a corrupted update, and I've reinstalled Vegas Movie Studio, so I can continue working on a project. However, a lot of the files in this project use a .mov format, and for some reason, Vegas 14 does not show any video footage when using the clips I put in the timeline. I have tried installing two different versions of Quicktime for Windows, and neither of them have changed anything. I know Vegas 14 has worked with these kind of files before, otherwise I would be having this issue a long time ago. What do you recommend I do?

MOVs can be made up of any of hundreds of codecs.

Open one of these files in the free download MediaInfo. Set MediaInfo's View to Tree and then copy and paste the report it generates to this forum. This will tell us the information we'll need in order to recommend your next step.

Your symptoms sound like the ones I had. I know you tried looking into Quicktime solutions. That did solve it for me. So, can we just check a few things?

Do you know what version you had to start? How did you uninstall it?

What version did you install?

The MediaInfo report shows that this video uses a variable frame rate. Converting it to a video with constant frame rate will likely resolve your problems. I've created a tutorial on doing this using Handbrake if you're interested. It's at least worth experimenting.

Is there a way to change the way an iphone records video so that it is constant frame rate?

Well, at first, I tried installing 7.6, and it didn't work, so I tried installing 7.7.9 over it and it didn't make a difference. I don't remember what version I had before I had Windows reinstalled, but if installing Quicktime is the route I should go, should Vegas start working with .mov files automatically when Quicktime is installed, or is there more to it than that?

Here's a link for reference. If QT 7.6.2 (and 7.7.9) don't work, your best bet is to re-wrap the .mov into an .mp4 per the FAQ.

Just thought further about what Steve Grisetti said, and I've just tried using Handbrake to bring the problematic files over to MP4, then opening the project file in Vegas and specifying the MP4 versions that showed up as missing due to the .mov incompatibility. That seemed to solve my biggest woe, given that the stuff that appeared in the timeline was what I had previously before the overhaul. Thank you!

Is it problem due to video files recorded using iPhone, Quicktime or Vegas?

My daughter just had the exact same problem. It started while she was editing through out the whole day. All of a sudden all files went offline. Now we can´t seem to recover the project. Media files marked as offline.
All video files have been recorded from an iPhone 5S.

Starting a new project with the exact same videos files seems to be working just fine.
This tells me the video files are good to go.

She used to run Vegas 13 on the very same Windows PC, and with the exact same video files recorded from the exact same iPhone.

Honestly - This has to be a Vegas 14 problem. I fail to see how it can be anything else. And we sure would like to get it solved, Vegas!!

Btw.. It´s Vegas movie studio 14 Platinum build 148, bought upgrade 11 days ago.

Please see posts above... It sounds like a Quicktime issue. Perhaps try to re-install QT or change versions of QT?

Something as simple as plugging or unplugging an external drive or changing a folder name or location can cause Vegas to report files offline; your project has no way of following them until you tell it where they're located.

I've heard of a lot of quirks and bugs with VMS 14 - - however, this isn't one of them.
