brand new install and on trying to import avi i get 'file not supported"
trying to import mp4 i get that i need the QuickTime plugin, i thought this was natively supported now?
Back up to the "Video" page and follow the instructions to post properties for the tiles you are trying to open.

and isnt 15 supposed to open mp4 with out quicktime installed?

You need an Xvid vfw codec for the AVI. Vegas doesn't install open-source codecs natively
The mp4 may need conversion in ffmpeg. The mpeg 2 audio is nonstandard, as in weird. Where are you getting this stuff?

the avi is from a small dvr used to record drone flights, the mp4 is the avi converted in vlc so i can drop it into vegas. powerdirector handles these no problems
Download the Xvid codec from the developers site and you "should" be set for Vegas.
The most common audio for mp4 is called AAC. If vlc conversion still complains about QuickTime in Vegas, start a new thread with an uploaded sample. The developers do want to know about this stuff
