Vegas Video Pro crashes constantly when trying to edit 4k video.

Steven-K wrote on 5/17/2020, 4:37 PM

I'm trying to perform some very simple edits on a 4K video shot from a drone (mp4). I can't even press play on the preview without the software hanging. Is anyone else having this issue? Is there a workaround?

System:

Latest version of Vegas 17 Pro

AMD 3900X

5700XT

32GB

1GB Samsung SSD NVMe

Are you referring to the video setting to automatically create video proxies for greater than 4k resolution media? I do have that checked.

Steven-K wrote on 5/17/2020, 5:08 PM

I just tried other media from the shoot and it's not causing the hang. I'm starting to think the media for that particular clip was corrupted.

You can try the VideoRedo trial with your unruly video.

Almost the same computer system spec as yours.... I don't edit 4K drone footage, but do edit Panasonic 4K with no problem.

Yes, I work with proxies.

It's not so much the drone that is the problem but rather the camera on the drone.

Is the drone's camera recording in Constant Frame Rate (CFR) or Variable Frame Rate (VFR)? Many on the forum over the years have reported issues relating to crashing etc when using VFR footage which Vegas Pro doesn't particularly like so it seems. One of the main workarounds suggested is to first convert the VFR footage to CFR by a transcoder like HandBrake or similar.

Surely it would be the camera on the drone rather than the model of drone that is important here. Liken it to a post saying that the footage from a BMW mounted camera doesn't work in Vegas Pro whereas the footage from the same camera but mounted on a Toyota works fine in VP.

The important information is the camera whether or not it is part of the drone purchase package.

With DJI, Parrot, Autel, etc., the camera comes with the drone, yes? That was my reason for asking. Now if the OP is using a drone that says "4K" but does it at an obscure frame rate (15fps) or some other codec in the mp4 wrapper, that too could be an issue.

Never thought to try and transcode it first, I'll give that a shot.

Reyfox: The footage was shot with an Anafi drone.

Thanks for the help everyone, I appreciate it.

@Steven-K is there any way to upload a short sample to the cloud? I would like to give it a shot on my computer. I've considered the Anafi as a possible drone.
