VHS C tape to Vegas

Ross-Jackson wrote on 6/25/2021, 11:42 AM

I have a number of VHS-C tapes that I wish to enter into a Vegas Movie Studio project.. Has any one done this via a tape base camcorder and been successful? I have the tapes and need to purchase an old camcorder. Before I do, I wonder if anyone could advise me if they think I should go down this route. I had a friend who transcribed them a few years ago, but his system was to place the tapes into a VHS cassette. Record a VHS cassette and then make a dvd. Lost a lot in reproduction.

If you have done it in Vegas I would appreciate the information. What do I need equipment wise to achieve.

Thank you

Ross

You will need a camcorder with A->D passthrough and Firewire to capture digital via Vegas Vidcap.

You will need a Firewire input or card on your computer.

Set-top DVD-RAM recorders are also a good option; you would need to input composite RCA, S-VHS or Component.

USB capture devices are usually crap.

Thank you for a prompt reply. Have no idea what all the information in the http is. Too complicated for me to understand. My computer, even though it is a low standard, it is only 2 month old. I would not like to invalidate the warranty by attempting to insert components.

Regards

Ross.

To follow up, many of the USB capture devices will be similar or worse to your friends process of transferriing to DVD. I have actually had decent quality from a DVD record, but it can vary depending on the quality of the original source and the quality of the DVD recorder.

@Ross-Jackson

Dear Ross.

 To digitize the VHS-C tires, this is an option

https://www.magix.com/gb/video/rescue-your-videotapes/

make it an mpeg file and can then be loaded into Vegas Movie Studio

Thank you. Its what I am looking for. However, it appears to be software only with cables for connection to a computer. I still need a player. VHS-C Camcorder or a VCR with a converter from VHS-C to VHS. Is that correct?

Regards

Ross

Yes, you need a way to play the tapes. That device that Granddadmd mentions is one of many hundreds available. They capture at generally DVD quality, as I mentioned earlier.

The information is only offered to help you get Firewire, which is necessary for digital capture in Vegas, working on Windows 10 if it doesn't already.

Try not to read anything more into it.

@Ross-Jackson

Dear Ross,

Save Your Video is a piece of hardware and a piece of software. to digitize you need an analog VCR+ a cassette to put the tape in.

But since you have the tapes, you no longer have the camera because it can be connected to the USB converter

For digitizing VHS-C you need:

1. A still working VCR-player.

2. A VHS-C cassette adapter.

3. An AV-DV converter or a Digital Camcorder with Analogue inputs and DV-out.

4. A firewire (DV) input at your pc. (not standard anymore nowadays).

5. Time for capturing.

If you have to buy all these things just for digitizing a few number of VHS-C cassettes, it's probably much cheaper to look for a (local) company who's specialised in digitizing analogue video.

They should digitize to DV-AVI and not mpeg2.

@3POINT

Dear 3POINT

I don't want to argue, just make a proposal.

 This option is not possible with Save Your Video (Dv-avi)( but Mpeg2 or MP4), but with MAGIX vdl Pro (is dv – Avi possible),

Then with regard to a special company this costs € 1.00 per minute in the Netherlands

I'm not here to argue either, but when I Google in the Netherlands, costs starts at 7,50 Euro per VHS cassette.

That's not a few number...

The adapters can be found on Amazon. You should be able to find a used VHS player at flea markets or such. IF you are like me, you have more time than money.

I have only experience with a Canopus ADVC110 which I used for digitizing my VHS-C tapes about 15 years ago. At that time it was already difficult to find a good working VCR-Player.

From USB adapters I always heard and read that they always suffer with out of sync problems.

Find a working Magnavox VHS to DVD set top recorder, a VHS-C adapter and be done with it. It's what I do.

These even have hardware noise reduction.
