Video Stream attributes not detected - Prores footage turn to black

MarcAndreBilodeau wrote on 7/27/2020, 2:13 PM

Hi everyone!

Been a user of VEGAS for a couple years now. Since last year, I started using ProRes as my main codec for shooting video and haven't had any problems whatsoever.

Today, as I was working with ProresLT material, after I imported approx 20clips in my timeline, the preview screen now shows a black image. It was working just fine a couple minutes before.

As I look at the file in the media explorer, it says ''Stream attributes could no be determined'', and I can hear the audio but the video is not showing up.
Weirdly, I can see the video thumbnails just fine, and if I try to take the clip in the trimmer, It shows the video, plays just fine, but If I try to take the in-out selection in the timeline, it shows a black screen in the preview.
It has been a very frustrating day, so I try and reach out to you to help me figure what's wrong.

I edited lots and lots of prores projets on VEGAS17 before this one, although it is the first time I use ProResLT.

I have tried :
-Unchecking/Checking the ''Quick time plugin'' in the depreceated features
-Uninstalled and reinstalled VEGAS
-Uninstalled and reinstalled QUICKTIME
-Installed the Avid Quicktime Codecs
-Installed K-Lite mega pack codec

Why k_lite codecs? Codes provided by magix that you require may be replaced. Maybe cause of your problems... Unistalling k_lite does not restore codes k_lite replaced. You may be faced with a fresh Windows install.

Do you have an image of your system taken when all was stable? If so you will be up & running in 10 minutes.

Seriously? I've had it installed for years before I changed my setup in 2019 and it never made the Prores files bug...

I just figured out if I open a new instance of Vegas and Copy/Paste the timeline, in the new Vegas instance the clips will show up and be readable... It looks like in the middle of nowhere, somehow, the old timeline stopped working with the ProRes clips.

Also, it's on/off, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't...

I'd be surprised if the K-lite codecs had anything to do with the issue..
Will have a look at that though! Thank you very much.

I realized it is maybe because I shot in ProresLT with embedded proxies? There is 2 video streams for each file, so I suppose 1 is the actual stream and the 2nd one is the proxy stream, and maybe that does interact with VEGAS at some point?

Run it through Handbrake. I really won't comment on questions involving K-Lite, except to ditch it. ProRes 422 will not open with the deprecated QT 7 32 bit library for Windows. afaik.

Sorry but what is Handbrake?

@MarcAndreBilodeau

Can you upload a short sample problem clip that can be downloaded for test?

AKA the HappyOtter at https://tools4vegas.com/. System 1: Intel i7-8700k with HD 630 graphics plus an Nvidia RTX4070 graphics card. System 2: Intel i7-3770k with HD 4000 graphics plus an AMD RX550 graphics card. System 3: Laptop. Dell Inspiron Plus 16. Intel i7-11800H, Intel Graphics. **Solved**

So after working my brain through the problem, I figured out what was the problem :

There was 2 things :
1st - The camera with which I recorded the footage has the option to embed the proxy file into the ProResLT file.
This seems to have caused the video streams problem as where VEGAS did not know what stream to chose, therefore would crash. The company has a software that can extract the proxies and I have done so.

The 2nd thing was the QuickTime plugin in the depreceated features. When there was proxy in the files, I needed the plugin to get the footage to function. It still showed as ''Video streams could not be determined'' but it played somehow.

After extracting the proxies, I unchecked the ''Quicktime plugin'' in the depreceated features, restarted the computer and now the files shows as ''4096x2160, 23,976 progressive, Intermediate'' which is the Vegas codec!

Thanks for you help!
