VP 16 crashes on import

Former user wrote on 10/17/2018, 2:16 PM

I think I broke my VP 16 (build 261). All was fine until today (10/17/2018) when I went to continue on a project. VP loads just fine. BUT when I go to either open a project, or import media, always from the hard drive, VP shuts down. Tried restarting the machine, tried uninstalling then re-installing. Neither worked. Was checking something. Now it loads, the cursor flashes for about 3 seconds, then goes solid, then VP goes away.

System: Windows 10 (64)
12 Gig
Integrated graphics

Please tell me there is a fix. And how to fix it.

Thank you all.

Move the media in that project to a different folder in your file system. Then do you get as far as a prompt about offline media? If so, choose "Ignore all missing files and leave them offline" at the bottom. Will the project then open? If it will open, gradually move the media back to the original location and re-open the project each time until you find the "bad" media. If it won't open, and your project uses any 3rd party plugins, you could try uninstalling them.

This troubleshooting post is probably the most helpful in this case, although it is more about Vegas not starting at all than about not being able to open a project: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-vegas-pro-won-t-start-what-can-i-do--104784/

After a bit more research here's what I learned:

I had my recording format set to MP4/iframe. Camera is a Panasonic HC-V180. I also used the camera's AVCHD setting. The AVCHD generates a MTS file. The MP4/iFrame generates a MP4 file. It's the MP4 files that cause VP 16 to stop running and close. When I click on a file in the project files it says 'MPEG2', but just looking in the bin it's a MTS file.
Just found out when I go to render ANYTHING VEGAS stops running and closes. Including already rendered projects.

Question 1) Why the two different formats?
Question 2) Does build 505? contain all the updates in 261?
Question 3) Is there a way to convert the iFrame files to simple mp4s or something else VEGAS can read?
Question 4) Why won't VEGAS render?

Thank you all in advance

Q3 - use Handbrake to convert them.

Isn't the Panasonic MP4 iFrame meant for creating files compatible with Apple systems? Wiki Your camera should have other mp4 formats that are compatible with Vegas.

I thought Pana Iframe had a compatible Windows decoder, just not sure about Vegas.

How are you importing your media? Sure to use Vegas Device Explorer, not Windows?

Question 2) Does build 3505? contain all the updates in 261?

I haven't heard of build 505, but build 307 does.

Regarding the rest, please supply more information as explained in this post. In particular C1 (MediaInfo) and perhaps C3 (a sample file).

And please don't dual post. Your other post has been hidden.

The iFrame mp4 are unusual being (with PAL versions) 960x540 25 fps only.

In regards to my post on 10/28/2018, 4:27 PM

Question 1) Why the two different formats? Not a major concern.

Question 2) Does build 505? contain all the updates in 261? Resolved. Read wrong line.

Question 3) Is there a way to convert the iFrame files to simple mp4s or something else VEGAS can read? Learning Handbrake

Question 4) Why won't VEGAS render? Still unresolved. Can do real time render, but Render As does not work. When I select it, I get the windows hour glass then VEGAS closes down.

Tried reinstalling, Deleting all the program folders and installing. I am at a loss as to what to do.

I'm desperate.

Fixed it. Radical fix, but fixed/ I deleted ANYTHING and EVERYTHING related to magix Program folders, AppData sub-folders, all of it. Installed just the core of VP, tested it. It worked, so I repeated that process 'til all was installed. Now all is right with my world once again.

Thank you all for your inspiration.
