x264vfw is the VfW (Video for Windows) version of well known x264 encoder + ffh264 decoder (from FFmpeg/Libav project).

Yes it will put x264 in AVI.
without b-frames or most compressed audio.
Used sometimes by movie pirates and throwaway camera makers in china.
is it a good and fast intermediary if you want to encode to mp4 later?
No.
It is not very good, and probably not very fast. Old, old tech.
