No the Edit version is just fine and does everything you need. as JN says V19 will be out soon and before it arrives Magix will offer buy V18 and get a free update to V19 all at a reduced price. Vegas is so simple to do the basics but also has much complexity below the surface if you need to dig deeper. (if you need other options for sound editing like sound forge or spectral layers they are often available at large discounts).

For $99 I'd do it personally- never saw an upgrade to a current version of VP be that low! I personally went from Movie Studio to Vegas Pro (Edit) and it was an easy switch.

If you buy VP18 now you will not be eligible for VP19 free upgrade. To be eligible you will need to wait, they usually have such offer close to new version release date. You may miss the your current VMS to VP offer if you wait.

Upgrading from VP18 Edit to VP19 Edit will cost you more (should be about $159 when they offer discounts).

If you are very limited in funds, I'd wait and see what would be an offer to upgrade from VMS to VP18 close to VP19 release (so with the free upgrade). If price is too high, I'd wait for another HumbleBundle deal in the next year when you can get VP16 or similar for a low price (it is just finished).

You probably have to choose. Pay $100 now for VP 18 or $150-200 at some point during the life of VP 19 (prices near the initial release are at the higher end of the range). You don't *have* to upgrade to VP 19, 18 works well and it's a perpetual license.

I wouldn't count on a HumbleBundle as they don't come yearly and to get to VP 18 or 19 would be at least $30 for that plus $150 to upgrade.

The trouble is, in the past it was easier to identify the differences between VMS and VP. VMS had a limited amount of Video and Audio tracks as well as often didn't include 3rd party plugin support and didn't support the higher resolution video and audio codec formats. Sony also published on their website side-by-side feature comparison details, so a customer at a glance could see what they were additionally getting between VMS and VP to be able to make a better informed purchase decision.

Now when I look at VMS "Platinum" and try to compare it to "VP Edit" there isn't a side-by-side feature comparison available that is published by Magix. VMSP now has unlimited tracks, 3rd party plugin support, and seems to support the latest hi-res video formats. The only thing I have been able to easily identify by viewing the VMS feature comparison which is available, is that it shows VMS only supports up to 16bit/48Khz audio which many people work with anyways.

It really seems to me the current path is that VMS and VP will eventually merge into one core Vegas product offering, which will likely make supporting them simpler. Where it seems what will be different between them are the additionally bundled software offerings.

I just finished struggling to figure out what "Vegas Post Suite" included compared to "Vegas Pro Suite" since the Vegas Post Suite is not included as part of the feature comparison summaries.

In the mean-time until these different products merge as I'm speculating, Magix really needs to work on updating some of the side-by-side Product feature comparisons of VMS vs VP and include Vegas Post Suite in there as well or these customer confusions of what we're actually purchasing are likely to continue. At this time, the only easily identifiable difference between them are their names and prices.

A $99 upgrade offer from VMS Platinum to VP Edit sounds like a spectacular deal. However, can anyone summarize what you're actually additionally getting with that upgrade over what they have currently? I know one says "Pro" and the other doesn't. Anything else?

It's all down to the type of videos you are doing.

For edits tools and flow with some overlays and titles, VMS is just fine.

Your content should "speak" more than the SW/HW you are using.

I even wanted to downgrade about a year ago because, to be honest, I don't really make elaborate videos and VMS is a lot cheaper.
However, the scripting and the speed envelope (both of which I really like) made me stay with Vegas Pro.

$99 is a pretty good deal. But usually about a month before an upgrade comes out there's a 2-for-1 upgrade offer... which would be vp18 plus vp19 when it comes out. But that's been priced about $199 for Edit in the past. Personally, I'd go for that instead even though I already own vp18... just so I can run it on 2 more machines without deactivating others.

Hi Guys! I own VMSP17 and am gradually.... gradually learning to use it. But often, even the basics leaves me stumped. But suddenly, when I open the app, a new notice jumps up on my screen offering Vegas Pro 18 EDIT upgrade for me for $99.00. Now that seems like a great deal but I had no idea what the "EDIT" version was so I looked up the comparisons and it seems to be pretty much the same as Vegas Pro 18. Right?

Question is, does the edit version have a "gotcha" where a newbie like me will suddenly have to step up for a more expensive version (as in "oh, that's not included in the edit version, so sorry".) And would a newbie like me be able to learn and take advantage of the VP18 features when I still struggle with VMSP 17?

I never used Vegas stream and was unfamiliar. Interesting, I just responded to another post where they were attempting to record multiple video tracks and audio tracks simultaneously in Vegas. I provided the explanation of the process of recording separate video on the cameras and audio directly into vegas and then syncing them in post within Vegas. It seems like Vegas stream may be closer to what they were actually looking for.

As I am an amateur and attempting very simple home video, dashcam, photo, travelogue and family type productions. Gathering a lot of disjointed clips, a little cleanup, a few titles, some captions, some music, some voice-over and send it out to family and friends. Yeah I would buy edit for $99 thats a steal. Don't upgrade to 19, wait till 20 or whenever you feel you want a new feature. Pro is very similar to platinum in terms of use, and if you advance in your editing you will have pro features to grow into.

• Improved color-grading tools.

Stuff I would like:
• More effects/filters/auto-looks.

In fact, the only thing I can think of that I would want in an "improved" Vegas is simply more plug-ins and filters; e.g., "auto-looks." I don't even really need Vegas Image or SoundForge (though I actually really like SoundForge).

Also, I'm not a huge color-grading guy and never shoot RAW or S-Log—most of the canned "looks" are totally fine for me. We're not here to convince you to buy anything. I'd do the VP 18 demo and see for yourself if it's useful for what you do. For Fx you're better off looking to third-party packages- Vegas has limited bells and whistles.

If you do video editing often and/or on a regular basis it is likely you would benefit from the scripting and extension facilities and resources of Vegas Pro. It's still unbeatable. It doesn't add effect thingies, it simplifies workflows. It's one of the main reasons I use Vegas Pro.

If you're after building your own effects then the compositing modes of Vegas Pro is another advantage over Movie Studio.
