Additional codecs to install?

tim-neighbors wrote on 10/8/2020, 3:22 PM

When using stock materials, I often have to transcode the footage before it will go into Vegas. Are there codec packages someone could point me to that can be installed on my computer so Vegas can read more codecs? Most of the files I'm wanting to use are .mov files for whatever that's worth. I don't know what codec they are.

I don't know what codec they are.

Many VP users use MediaInfo to ID codecs.

Otherwise, is QT enabled in VP, it is not enabled by default.

All the codecs the program can handle are delivered with the program or the program ask to download it. Never install codec packs because most they override per Windows the right installed ones of Vegas

I don't know what codec they are.

But you would, if you followed these instructions.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/

You need to use a rifle, not a shotgun.

WAIT until you need a specific file opened, find the specific codec to do it, and install it. There is no pre-emptive pack of codecs you need, and they can cause you to install your OS from scratch.

RE your signature: There was no Vegas Pro 1. Vegas was originally an audio workstation released by Sonic Foundry, with Vegas Video 2, which I own, being the first comprehensive video timeline editor. Consider revising.

I assuming the stock material MOV might using MotionJPEG / PhotoJPEG compression. - and that requires QT enabled in VP.

How do I enable QT? In the past I've always just made sure QT player was installed on my machine and Vegas started working with QT files. I used MediaInfo and here's what it said:
MPEG-4 (QuickTime): 52.8MiB, 3s 36ms. 1 video stream: PNG Writing library: Apple QuickTime, TSC: 2997
And MusicVid, I'm not sure what in my signature you're referring to. I did mention it in my bio, but what is wrong there? I started out using Sonic Foundry Vegas v.1 to make music cause, yes it was an audio workstation then. Was it not called Vegas Pro back then?

Just for historical interest only:

I knew that Vegas started off as an audio editor with Sonic Foundry, but I wasn't aware of all the name changes over the years. It wasn't until Vegas Pro 10 that I joined the Vegas Pro-sphere.

It's under deprecated features in preferences. They deprecated it because quickitme is no longer supported in windows.

Thanks all! I enabled QT in 'depreciated features' and it now accepts that footage. I don't fully understand why it was depreciated. These clips go right into Davinci and Media Encoder (and thus presumably Premiere) when running in Windows. I'm sure there must be reason, but I hope Magix finds a way to make it work with this codec in particular because it seems very common. -particularly where there is an alpha channel for transparency.

As QuickTime is no longer supported on Windows, we found it increasingly difficult to support our QuickTime plugin as more recent updates to Windows 10 have proven to be problematic with QuickTime. We needed to turn this off by default so a large number of users would not experience crashes on startup when we tried to initialize that plugin. We do know that some files which were supported in the QuickTime plugin are currently not able to be read by VEGAS. We are working on getting more comprehensive support into the So4Compound plugin which would cover some of these older QuickTime formats. Also a future ProRes plugin could help reduce the gap created when the QuickTime plugin was turned off.
