Another nasty, latent Vegas rendering bug

Or maybe he's simply right and frustrated. Also, some of us were raised and taught in environments where sophistry does not carry a negative connotation.

The tone of posts in a forum set how people feel about the forum.

I disagree. I have on several occasions vented my frustration here and stronger then John did but that doesn't mean I feel bad about this forum... quite the opposite.

But John's post is not trying to solve the problem or even present it in how it impacts most users.

I thought he made clear in how it could impact other users. He cant solve a problem if the problem is in the software and he also mentioned that there is a workaround.

If I wanted to I could take offence to the word "nasty" in the title of the post but that would be it. But, I don't take offence and rather look at the content of his post.

Thank you johnmeyer for your sensible post. I hope you change your mind and stay around.

--> But John's post is not trying to solve the problem or even present it in how it impacts most users. He also states that it could generate other problems - classic general to specific argument which is almost always wrong. He tone is argumentative rather than supportive...

Wow, you clearly didn't read this entire thread, starting with my initial post that was made several years ago. Also, you obviously have no clue about the threads to which I referred where Nick Hope, MusicVid, farss, john_dennis, Craftech, amendegw, and many others tried to get to the bottom of some of Vegas' problems related to deinterlacing, downsizing, and rendering. Here is one of those threads. It has 167 answers:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/interlaced-hd-to-dvd-again-some-test-renders--84017/

Your last two posts are so completely wrong, that you might want to delete them. In particular, if you think that all of us were "not trying to solve the problem or even present it in how it impacts most users," then you clearly are not comprehending what you are reading. I am mentioning that thread, and linking to it, because I already referenced it several times in this thread, and much of the discovery done there impacts what I posted in this thread.

You need to understand a lot more about what is going on now, and what has gone on in the past. I've been using Vegas every day since version 4 and posted thousands of times in this forum before giving up, for the reasons I already posted. I am a software designer, videographer, and media restoration fanatic. I am a piker compared to those who I already lauded in previous posts, but I actually do know a thing or two about software and, as most people here will attest, have done nothing BUT try to help people. Do a search for Deshaker Vegas Script, and perhaps you will find some of the threads in this forum where I shared a complex script that completely automated the process of stabilizing footage, long before Sony incorporated a scaled-down version of Mercalli into Vegas Pro.

But, if you want to continue to make comments about people, rather than the topic at hand, go right ahead. It won't bother me because I just changed my preferences so I will no longer get emails every time people post. It was that preference that sucked me back into this quagmire, and boy am I sorry I "took the bait," to use your phrase.

Sheeshhh.

There are three basic ways to get Deinterlacing wrong, and only one way to get it right. Vegas gets it right most of the time. Unfortunately, some workflows in Vegas get it wrong all of the time. One's stance on this dilemna varies dramatically depending on which side of that fence one is on.

The bug is being reported by multiple users, and Nick has acknowledged it is goes back before the current version.

Therefore, it is encumbent on the developers to address the bug, in less time than it has taken. Or maybe they just don't know how to fix it.

That it is being raised yet again after 2+ years by a passionate user is worthy in its own right. That his delivery is being called out by less passionate users may also be a good sign, after two years of inattention.

John Meyer is one of the most knowledgeable and respected men working in this field. His contributions to this forum have always been thoughtful and helpful. He has assisted so many people, both those already proficient in Vegas and newcomers, and I for one (and there are many who feel the same) are deeply saddened to see him leave this forum.

Thank you John for all you have done for us over the years. You have always been so ready to help people and share your huge fund of knowledge. And a further and special personal thank you from me for the way you helped me to understand and deal with the problem of transferring cine film to digital ---there were two lengthy threads on this subject a few years back which, between them, amount to the complete reference book for dealing with this problem. What you said helped me to successfully complete the transfer of a couple of miles of cine film to video, much to the joy of my family.

Good Luck John.

I can only echo Richard's fine comments. And as an IT dunce, John has allowed me to stand on the shoulders of Giants.

All the best JM! And thanks for all the Fish . . oh yeah, and your Deshake Script, which was Grazie-Proof.

It may help to view this from a graphical perspective, having read Donald Graft's groundbreaking articles many years ago.

Not all of the wrong combinations necessarily look bad; however, a dangling field at the beginning of a file, as described earlier in this discussion, is a ringer for field dominance issues.

John and Eric both make an interesting case for a latent bug that reveals itself after certain downstream actions, not unlike recessive gene traits, as we should have learned about in fifth grade.

AFAIK, Vegas blends or interpolates, which are the two most rudimentary forms of deinterlacing. Before Magix can progress much with smarter, more intuitive algorithms, it would seem important to get the core behavior straightened out, even as a legacy of Sonic Foundry.

To someone who runs their business on production deadlines, and having encountered unexpected field issues in the output, I've found the word "nasty" entirely appropriate, if not a little tame. I started when in-house teevee commercials were done with a Phillips/Zoran hardware encoder! One step forward, two steps back. Two steps forward...

I'll try to unearth the original Graft articles, written during the early days when he was the sole pioneer of deinterlacing. I also think he would mostly agree with what's been reported by John and Eric as as reflecting accurate concerns

The newer Vegas Pro 14, has new De-interlacing method called 'Smart Adaptive (GPU Only)'. How's this compares to previously known 'Blend' and 'Interpolation' ?

Ha! Actually found the original thread I read some 14 years ago. Even remembered a little.

Really interesting stuff from a true pioneer of Deinterlacing, Detelecine, and PAL conversion:

If everyone here would read these threads, the sum of our collective knowledge will be greater than any individual's. That's a promise.
