Audio track compressor

Regarding Vegas pro 17

1. when i open the audio track FX, i have automatic inclusion of track noise gate, track EQ and track compressor; this normal? (all seem to be disabled)

2. regarding track compressor - I would think that the audio track volume slider would affect the amplitude of the audio going into the compressor; so that if i reduce the volume of the track via the slide, then the peaks woudl be lower and the compressor would not kick in at all. but it seem this is not the case. Is there a way to have the volume slide on the audio track affect the level going into the compressor

(what i am trying to accomplish - i have multiple singers at different levels. I want to level adjust each singer via the volume slider and the apply a compressor to each voice)

thanks!

Track noise gate, EQ and compressor have been been the defaults for as long as I can recall. The defaults can be changed.. or removed though. There can be up to four default FX,

Basically, the chainer is pre-fader, though in the assignable Fx mode, a plug-in can have a pre or post send (similar to send/return on a hardware console)

You should experiment with using the Track comp (or other compressor) in Assignable FX mode (Insert menu) where each track will have a separate send (I think post fader is the default send). The send level can be automated as well.

I recommend using volume envelopes to even out severe volume changes on the tracks as well.

rraud - thanks. These guys are singing and it woudl be quite a bit of time for me to find and equalize the loud parts (12 singers). I have use the envelopes in the past but ugh..was hoping to try something automated.

Is there a "block diagram" that shows the possible places to do effects etc for audion?

ty!

I use the Wave Hammer plugin in Sound Forge. All the time.

MV.....I don't do a lot of audio mixing work so i'm trying to skate by this as a one shot deal and looking to minimize my investment in time if possible..but ty.

You may want to try a multiband compressor, there are quite a few avaible.. free and otherwise. My favorites are no longer available or usable. Ultrafunk and the iZotope Direct X that was included with SF Pro 10. Neither work with 64 bit apps.
The freeware JB Broadcast Compressor is worth mention but may be difficult to setup for non-audio folks. Otherwise. it has a good sounding auto gain option, three frequency bands of gain reduction, peak limiting and image settings. JB compressor manual
